To my knowledge, he never did.  It was rumored that either he or his agent said that, but I never saw anything that he actually did make that demand or anything that conclusively indicated anything he said meant that.

Then again, when that back and forth was going on and for several weeks afterwards, people here were spinning everything he or the Panthers said fast enough to achieve flight.

I always thought that was an odd connection of dots, because his recent injury history did not put him in a position to demand an extension or else he was sitting out.  NOT being on the field to prove he was healthy would have been the last thing he should have been thinking.  His value would not have gone up by sitting out, and missing 16 more games.

"Can't I get a little commitment" was indeed about an extension, and frankly nobody should be surprised by that. It's pretty much how most people took it when it was said anyway (not exactly subtle).

But hey, what veteran approaching the end of his current contract doesn't want an extension? Heck, his agent would have been trying to make that case long before the video came out.

Going back to what we read at the time and connecting it to what we know now, I suspect the word that Newton wouldn't play without an extension was floated by his agent, but in reality it was always an empty threat. Newton somewhat undermined it himself when he let his feelings be known about wanting to stay "till they kick me out".

Truthfully, I don't think Newton believed for a minute that the Panthers would genuinely part ways with him. That's why the news that they really were willing to do so was so upsetting for him to hear.

It's kind of like a spouse talking about divorce just to win an argument, then finding out the party of the second part took the suggestion seriously.

Personally I think this has been a convientent excuse throughout the process.  Teams have resources to get around this.  Also doctors tend to be viewed as essential.

Here again people need to stop trying to connect the dots with what they read in the media.  Between the half truths, lies and facts that don't get reported it is pretty much impossible to.

Just use some logic and/or common sense.

It would be very logical to expect Cam to want an extension.  All high profile players do, and they should.  As far as the recent injuries go, if Wilson or Rodgers had some injuries in the season leading up to contract talks, I'm sure they would still expect extension.

Best guess, Cam wanted an extension, team decided to go in a different direction.  Cams market was a lot less then anyone (Cam, our front office, and the fans) thought.  At the beginning of the process Cam probably wanted a starting job with a good salary, at this point I'm sure his demands are a bit different.  Here again logical.

At this point Cams best option is probably to wait for a starter to get hurt, while in the meantime doing every thing he can to get healthy.

That seems like a very likely scenario.  I dont think Cam ever truly believed he would be cut.

I'd quote Mr Scot and AUPanther, but then this post would be about three pages long.  As it is, it will only be two.

I stopped trying to interpret things like "wanting a little commitment" long ago.  I was never sure if that was a weak effort to spur negotiations or whether it was an effort to get the Panthers to put the kibosh on rumors swirling at the time that they were going to pursue a starting QB early in the draft, and even might trade up to do so.  Either showed commitment, one just for 2020 and one beyond.

People asserted Cam and the Panthers were in negotiations.  The problem is it takes at least two sides to negotiate, and the Panthers never engaged.  As AUPanther and Mr Scot said, he wanted an extension.  No crime there.  The team did not want to even discuss that without seeing him play again.  No crime there.  Both sides looking out for their own interests.  No negotiations, just one side wanting to negotiate and the other side seeing no immediate need.

Everything beyond that is speculation, furthering rumors (including things reported that have never been verified), and people trying to connect dots that may not have any connection at all.

I have no idea when the Panthers decided to move on from Cam.  It could have been during last season (when the decision was made to upend the whole thing), it could have been right after the season, it could have been when his camp tried to prod negotiations along, if he or his agent did threaten to hold out, that might have been the last straw, it could have been when they had the chance to sign a QB they thought could run Brady's offense for a price they liked, or it could have been some combination of several of those events.

This is the wrong year (or maybe era) to be a QB looking for a starting job who is on the long side of 30, wanting a big contract, coming off recent injuries that are in places that call his ability to play the position in question (shoulder) or the ability to play your style (foot, which I think teams are probably less concerned with).  Because of the beatings Cam took here, those injuries also cast doubt about his ability to stay healthy.  Not his fault, but there are parts of him laying on the field at BofA thanks to our prowess at protecting him combined with running an offense that almost seemed designed to maximize the poundings.  None of that is a secret around the league.

For every single player who has talent to play in the NFL --- there is an off-setting measure as it relates to distraction....

....unfortunately for Cam, at this point the latter outweighs the former.

At some point the picture may change for some team in a magnitude that tips the scale back in Cam's favor but if he is not signed by the time the season opens the odds are good he never plays in the NFL again.

Make no mistake about it, right now Cam is as healthy as he is ever going to be....

....if this isn't good enough he is done.

"till they kick me out."

Here again people are forming an opinion based on things they are hearing through the media which can be a mistake.

Maybe Cam said that to make himself look like the good guy to the fan base.  What is he suppose to say? "I want to leave"

Maybe Cam and his agent were adamant they didn't want to play on a one year deal.

I go back to :

Cam wanted an extension.

Team didn't want to give him one.

At that point Cam's people and the Panthers probably both started looking for trades.  Which both parties probably overestimated the trade market for Cam.  Also Cam's people probably assumed that best case he was released, then, signed a good contract with a team he wanted to go to, which looking back was a major mistake.

In the meantime TB became available which pretty much guaranteed the team wasn't going to keep Cam.  They aren't going to carry two $20m contracts.

Here is what I'm curious about though, not that it matters, what if TB had signed with another team?  Would we have still released Cam and gone with Grier?  Or would we have let Cam play on the last year of his deal, once Cam realized his market was terrible?

In hindsight Cam's best option would have been to never ask for the extension to start with.  Not that you can really blame him for doing so.

That is a question for which we may never know the answer.

Honestly, the latter scenario was what I thought would happen when the 2019 season wrapped up.  I never really saw them rolling with Grier at the helm, unless Cam got hurt again.

The rumour I heard was that Cam wanted a 5 year extension and the Panthers only offered three.  If that is true, then I can't really blame either side.  But that is a big if.

I don't think any of us will ever know the details of what happened, unless its some tell all interviews that Cam and Hurney or Tepper do 5-10 years down the road.  And then we would have to get both sides.  In the end, he is gone and that is that.  I hope he does well in the future, as long as it is against the Cowboys, Saints, Falcons, or Bucs.  Or not us.

And >$120mm in career earnings from contracts alone (easily 8 figs in endorsements too). Dude could sit on his couch and play Clash of Clans for a decade and still be an overwhelming success.

Think it's more likely he replaces an injured QB on a playoff team at some point midseason, though.
