I watched a game at bar in February. It was ok to watch only because there was nothing else on. Coronavirus May have killed the XFL this time, but it wouldn’t have lasted much longer regardless. There is a reason these leagues keep failing. It can’t compete with the NFL at all.

That’s the thing, it doesn’t have to compete. It starts after the NFL season and gives football fans more football to enjoy.

Sounds like an OPINION. It wasnt supposed to compete, it was supposed to provide a second chance for football players to get back into the NFL, which it did. Why are NFL fans so insecure? Its weird. You can like both.

Also, if you are over the age of 18 and still watch wrestling, you need to see a therapist.

NFL already has a developmental and minor league - it’s called college football.

Scalding takes.

Really, really dumb and bad scalding takes.

I used to love wrestling. Loved it. I quit watching it when I went to college. It’s entertainment for kids and trashy people with low IQs.

Also - you don’t think NCAA is a minor league for professional sports, particularly the NFL? I wonder how many college coaches worth a crap would dare use something like “I don’t care if you go the NFL and I’m not going to develop your skills so that you can have the opportunity to play at the next level” as a recruiting pitch to some 5 star prospects?

U right it is an opinion. And based on the continued failure of these leagues, the financial shortcomings and lack of fan support - many, many people share this opinion. XFL is garbage.better poo to do with my time.

That's you. I didn't even watch wrestling as a kid. So I have literally no emotional ties to wrestling. But entertainment is entertainment. It's for all ages.

And no it's not a developmental league. It's college. Most colleges don't prepare you for the NFL even if you are groomed to play in the NFL. These coaches are gonna say they're prepping them for the NFL but it's a totally different mindset and work ethic when they get to the NFL. You're playing wildly varrying different levels of competition in college. It's not a developmental league. It's just College Football.

If the XFL or any minor league football became affiliated with the NFL and allowed college aged kids to play in it and actually paid them a salary,  the division 1A college presidents would throw such a hissy fit and sue so many people I don't know if that league would make it 1 year.  The college presidents would take them to court, congress and do everything else they could to stop it.  Whoever started it would have to have pockets so deep that they could fight pretty much all of college football in the court system.

A D-league wouldn’t necessarily need to circumvent college. Kids would still play in college like they do in baseball and basketball then get drafted or signed as UDFAs by NFL teams. Think about it. Each team could have an affiliate or initially multiple teams could share an affiliate until the league got going like the NBA D-league was originally. The NFL teams could then send their developmental talent to the minor leagues to develop rather than get cut and bounce around the practice squads. Some talent needs a place to develop and the best way to do that is to work with pro coaches and play football, if they can’t get that in the NFL, they could get that in an NFL D-league.

Another advantage here is it would give some players an avenue to play football professionally that might not make it in the NFL like talent does by going playing in Canada. It would also give some talent the option to turn pro as soon as possible to earn money playing football rather than risking themselves playing extra years for nothing in college to better their chances of being drafted.

There’s no need for a D-league to circumvent college. Let college continue to develop high school kids into adults, then let teams build farms for talent in a professional minor and dip in and out when needed during a season. Makes sense to me.

With that said, if a new D-league is too difficult to setup in the US. Why not agree a deal with the CFL and use their existing setup to develop fringe/raw talent? Ok slightly different rules and whatnot, but it’s an established pro league that talent have made the jump from and been successful in the NFL. It could be a viable alternative, though I think the NFL could easily put together a good collection of locations to play a D-league.

Probably because Europe is a long way away from its main consumer base. Potentially we could sustain an NFL franchise here in the UK, but a D-league team would probably be a different story because fans would probably rather watch the international series games over a developmental team.

I think a D-league of sorts could work in the US. How many footballing locations could support a team? Plenty come to mind such as cities that have lost their teams (eg San Diego would be a perfect spot for the Chargers and Rams to send their prospects) and cities that would like to host teams (eg Portland, Oregon would be an ideal spot for Seattle to send their players).

NFL teams carry 90 players at preseason and cut down to 53, with a dozen practice squad bodies. Teams could keep their best cut players and fringe prospects and send them for more practice snaps and game snaps in a D-league. They could even potentially include two way players that aren’t playing much for the NFL team/are usually inactive but could suit up for a D-league team. It works in other sports and could work in the NFL if they have the desire to go for it.

The NFL and college football make there money off TV contracts.  The fans in the stadium are nice but that is not what makes a league go.  TV money is.  You could play the games on the moon and if the TV money is there the league can work.

People don't want to see guys that 95% of are not good enough for the NFL.  They want to see guys who are good enough to play in the NFL today, tomorrow or at least in a year or two.  If you can't get that you can't get a new league.
