In that order. 90% of objective (non Panther fans) people agree. The numbers support it as well. Everything else is emotion, sorry that doesn’t count.

Then you need to take Packers and Ravens fans out too if you want obectivity.

I agree he's criminally underrated and I'm all for this convo.  Should be a HOF lock, but we'll see.  Replace Marvin Harrison with Steve Smith, Smitty would probably be mentioned with Jerry Rice and Randy Moss while we wouldn't even know who Harrison is.

Smith was an angry little man on the field. I've never, and I'm just saying never, seen a player who would fight as hard as Smith to bring in a pass, gain an extra yard, or disrespect an opposing D the way 89 did. And he had the talent to equal the fire in his belly. He was a truly once-in-a-generation player.

Also, I don't think you can discount the politics in terms of him being a Hall of Famer. He's an analyst who has remained very visible and relevant after his playing career ended. That means he's on the minds of HOF voters, and him getting some recognition boosts his Q-rating as a TV persona. I don't the NFL is unaware of that.

you guys are dumb as hell LMAO. anquan boldin has similar stats as smith + a super bowl ring and no one is saying he's going to the hall of fame. face facts the wr position is a logjam and smith is gonna get overlooked by other receivers of his era. namely fitzgerald megatron julio jones etc as well as new studs constantly flooding the league. no one cares that he told aquib talib to ice up son 8 years ago or whatever.

meanwhile peppers is in top 5 all time sacks plus kuechly was the face of his position for a decade. both of them are on all decades list (peppers is on there for both the 2000s and 2010s)

steve smith is the definition of "hall of very good". peppers is the panthers goat. i understand that smith was loud as fug and peppers was not much of a leader, but peppers was a much better DE than smith was as a WR.

He was definitely a HOF caliber talent and player, but it's definitely borderline on whether or not he'll get in. Playing in a conservative run heavy offense with a borderline top 10 QB didn't do him any favors (that's not a shot at Jake in any way, I love the guy but that's just reality). Time is not on his side as the NFL evolves more and more pass heavy.

Best receiver in franchise history.

There's no contest. Moose is a distant 2nd. Given our incredibly weak history at WR, if DJ Moore repeats his stats from last season this year he'll already be our 3rd leading WR in franchise history. Other than Smitty and Moose, we don't have a single other WR with over 3000 receiving yards. To put it in perspective, KB, LaFell, and Funchess are our #4, #5, and #6 all-time leading WRs. Moore is already #7 after his 2nd season in the league. Our current #3-6 all-time leading receivers are currently two TEs and two RBs. That's almost unbelievable ineptitude at the WR position for a franchise.

Steve Smith is one of the best WRs of all time and I have seen almost all of them. Was watching the Raiders and whoever play when the network switched to show Heidi. Famous incident. Was watching before the leagues merged.

I might not know this if I were a Chargers fan, a Chiefs fan, etc and never really saw him play much.

If he does not get into the HOF it is because of where he played and the QBs and coaches he was teamed up with.

Anquan Boldin wasn’t the game changer Smith was. Fact.

I definitely wouldn't go that far. Harrison was a stud. But yeah, Smitty's numbers would almost certainly have looked a lot better playing in that Indy offense with 5x MVP Peyton Manning vs. Fox's three yards and a cloud of dust offense.

peppers was never the best DE in any season outside of 2006, and that's only because merriman is listed as an OLB. i don't really see how anyone except luke is the best panthers player ever. he was the best MLB in the league from 2012-2017 and it wasnt even a little close until wagner broke out (who only surpassed him due to luke's injuries) greatest? probably smith, but the best is definitely luke.

It depends on the measure you use. Peppers had freakish talent but seemed to underacheive for his potential. Smitty on the other hand was pound for pound perhaps the toughest player that ever played in the league. They were both great in their own way. I tend to give it to Smitty because he maximized his talent and potential more than Peppers who by stats alone wins hands down. And if greatest means the guy who made the most impact you might include Mills in the equation although he was only a player for us for a few years.
