It's very simple. Julius Peppers and Luke Kuechly are first ballot HOFers (Peppers is a lock, Luke mayyy wait a year or two). However, Steve Smith is never getting in the HOF.

Luke..1st Team All-Pro (5)...Pro Bowl (7)

Julius...1st Team All-Pro (3)...Pro Bowl (9)

Smitty...1st Team All-Pro (2)...Pro Bowl (5)

Jenkins...1st Team All-Pro (2)...Pro Bowl (3)

Tolbert...1st Team All-Pro (2)...Pro Bowl (3)

Bates...1st Team All-Pro (1)...Pro Bowl (5)

Davis...1st Team All-Pro (1)...Pro Bowl (3)

Gross...1st Team All-Pro (1)...Pro Bowl (3)

Newton...1st Team All-Pro (1)...Pro Bowl (3)

Beason...1st Team All-Pro (1)...Pro Bowl (3)
————————————

Agree that Luke is a lock.

Lots of folks discount Pro Bowls...

...outside of that Smitty and Pepp are pretty close and Smitty played a position that is MUCH more difficult to stay in The League for the long haul.

Personally I think Smitty is more deserving than Pepp (doesn’t mean Pepp isn’t deserving).

Smitty, Peppers, Cam, and Luke are definitely the four greatest Panthers players of all-time. I don't really care to argue on the order of rank.

It's honestly something that we can say that.

Looking at our 95 brothers they have...who? MJD?

And then there's the Texans who've had a couple, Andre Johnson, Watt and I'm sure you can put Hopkins there too.

Only downside is we don't have any hardware to show for it

Smitty carries the team during his era. Cam carried the team during his. Who’s turn will it be to carry the team next?

Back to the topic, how many 5’9” receivers do you see mossing defenders consistently? I’d argue just one. SS89.

Lol he is first ballot.  There was no doubt he would get in before, but now that he is on NFL network, 1st ballot is a lock.

SS89 is the best sub 6 foot receiver of all time period and the only one to do the things he did. If your talking about the panthers also Luke retired early, Cam got hurt, and Pep produced half on other teams. He's the pound for pound goat and give him a Hof Qb and he might have been the goat period. Luke, if he had played a Ray Lewis length career would have been the goat at his position as well.

Only 7 people in the entire history of the NFL have more all-purpose yards than Smitty. SEVEN. Only 7 people have more career receiving yards. ONLY SEVEN.

Everyone who has ever won the triple crown has done so with a Hall of Fame QB. He did it with Delhomme on a team that didn't pass.

Everyone dismisses longevity. The best ability is availability and all that. You can project out and imagine a Hall of Fame career for Kuech .... or you could just look at the real existing true HoF career of Steve Smith. his 05 and 08 season were ranked as the best 2 seasons in modern history for a WR based on Yards per pass attempt which is essentially WR version of QBR . I honestly believe Steve Smith is far and away the best Panther of all time. I don't have peppers there because although he is one of the best ever and accumulated great stats, I never saw him take over games the way Smith did. Peppers usually felt like the guy who put the nail in the coffin, but Smith was single handedly our entire offense for years. Peppers often had other great players around him.

Julius Peppers only had one season where he was truly the best player at his position, and we were a 7-9 squad that year.  Steve Smith had probably four, but at minimum three, which is extremely good for a WR.  Peppers also played on a defense that was loaded with pro bowlers in the front 7 year in and year out.  Steve Smith played on an offense where he was basically the ONLY guy worth a damn.

I feel like I people think I'm crazy when I say this, but honestly, I think if Smith had played for the Manning-led Colts, for example, he would have had MULTIPLE 2,000 yard seasons, and would hold virtually every record in the book.

Steve Smith is the greatest WR of all time.

Put him with Peyton Manning during that same era he was playing with Chris Weinke, Rodney Peete, Vinny Testaverde, Jimmy Pickles, and Jake Delhomme, and he's at least second or third all time in receiving yards if not first, in less years than Jerry Rice himself.

TD isn’t getting enough love in threads like this. That dude was a beast who worked through some serious injuries to play including playing with a stapled broken arm.

Muhammad? Really. I love Moose to death but he had one great season for us when Smitty went down. And then left to Chicago and Smitty was still balling out of his mind.

Yes Really Muhammad. I'm not saying that Muhammad was great. I'm saying that Muhammad provided Steve Smith with help by giving Delhomme another reliable target to throw to. He's the only receiver that I recall doing that consistently during Smitty's tenure. Steve Smith is without a doubt, the best WR in Carolina Panthers History!

Yeah he was

Still not in the conversation with those other four though.

Steve Smith would have my vote.

The play where he stuck his hand in the ground and shrugged off like 8 guys as he pivoted and ran for a TD, barely avoiding being down by contact, is my favorite play in Panther's history.
