*Hypothetical* Joe Brady contingency plan

If Brady replicates his success quickly and shows his potential to be a HC and another team tries to poach him in the next few years, what do you guys think the Panthers will do this time around?

I ask this because last time we lost an exciting OC we became stagnant and complacent until being forced to make an outside hire. That first outside hire in RR tenure was yet again another complacent familiar choice in Norv Turner. NT did have Cam looking like a legit pocket QB and could’ve possibly helped him progress if not for his injuries but its sad that over 9 years we had 3 OCs and the majority of it our offense was extremely underwhelming.

 

So what I’m trying to gain from this do you think they will groom a protege or spend money to bring in a intuitive mind to not be stuck in offensive purgatory yet again.

From what we’ve seen from Rhule, he appears to be calculated and have a particular process and way of doing things. He would likely consider all options and take who he feels fits his program and philosophies the best. 

He’s known for turning organizations around for the better, you don’t do that without having a vision that’s sustainable.

Having a young staff that could prove successful in many facets will lead to turnover on the staff and I’m sure he may anticipate that if/when the time comes and figure it out. If he doesn’t.. well, we will have to see how that goes.

Hopefully we are able to keep him if he does well but wouldn’t be worried if we can’t.

Getting paid like a HC still isn't being a HC. If Brady has aspirations of being a HC, nothing will keep him here as OC if he has HC opportunities elsewhere.

I don't know if any GM is going to give an OC that is 31 or 32 years old with only 1 or 2 years as an OC a shot as a head coach.  But teams get desperate so it's hard to say.  But you would hope that in 2 years, if this offense works good enough for him to get a head coaching job, that some of the position coaches know it well enough and understand how to use it that they could be promoted to the OC job.  At least that would be the hope.

I mean, the Cardinals hired a sub-.500 fired college coach with no NFL experience whatsoever as their head coach, so who knows?

If Brady is everything that he is rumored to be, I see him being a HC in 2023. There's no guarantee that he hits the ceiling that he did at LSU, but if he does, he will fit that young/innovator/exciting offensive minds and in high demand.

For us, I would think Rhule is planning for that as well and I would assume that Nixon would be next in line. He was with Rhule at Temple and then as the Co-OC at Baylor. In his prime currently at 45, he may get the nod when Brady moves on. 

Peetz could be the other option as he has a solid amount of NFL experience and 8 years younger than Nixon. 

DJ Mangas I am assuming goes with Brady as his OC.

I think that we are already planning for this, or potentially evolving the offense should he still be with the team.

Phil Snow is the least likely to take a head coaching job elsewhere (due to his age and where he's at in his career) and is Rhule's guy. He came up under Snow, and then took Snow with him when he went to new heights. The team is going to build the defense first and allow Brady to do what makes him such an attractive hire: work with what he has.

So long as the offense isn't ignored and gets a little love every season (ie: next year we will need to look at a solution for the long-term at center as well as figure out the OT situation if Moton isn't retained), I think we'll be in a good place. I'm super excited to see the defense that we end up building :o

DJ Mangas is probably apart of the plan to a degree. But he's also followed Brady at every stop since their time together at William and Mary. 

This is a potentially good problem to have as long as their is a young guy or two developing behind the scenes. But this is also way to early and premature but we all know what Brady's endgame is and more power to him, he's earned it thus far.

No one bounces back to the league as quickly as he did and thinks about settling for coordinator.

No doubt. But, there's no way to know if he even wants to be a head coach or if he would make a good one.  Right now we don't even know if he will be a good OC.  I believe he can, but has never had the oppurtunity unitl now
