1-on-1 with Will Grier: Respect for Cam, recovery (he’s dunking) and new offense

Couple of excerpts below:

There have been some huge changes in the quarterback room. What’s it like being the longest-tenured quarterback as a second-year player?
It was hard at first because of my relationships with Cam and Kyle. Me and Kyle are good friends and go way back, and learned a lot together. With Cam, he was kind of like a big bro. He was always very welcoming to me since Day 1, always giving me advice. I became really close to him as the season went on, and just have a lot of respect for him as a person. When it all happened, my initial reaction was just sad that I wasn’t going to have those guys in the room. But Kyle landed in the same offense, he knows it really well. I think he’ll help that organization a lot. And obviously, wish nothing but the best for Cam.

As for the changes and who’s coming in, I’m super excited to work with Teddy. He’s been in the league for a long time, played with a lot of different guys under different coaches and has found success in different offenses. In our meetings, I can tell he’s a very cerebral guy. He understands football. I’ve already picked up things about his game that I can learn and use in my game, which I’m always doing when I talk to a guy that’s played for a long time. I think he has a special talent. He’s been in this offense before and I’m excited to get to work with him. As far as P.J. Walker, I don’t know him very well. In the meetings we’ve been in, seems like a good guy and a good addition to the room. He’s played with Coach Rhule before, so he’s familiar with him and with the staff. I’ve gotten along really well with the staff so far. I like these guys. I think they’re very driven people and they seem like committed people. They seem like they’re gonna win at all costs. They’ve displayed that in these virtual meetings. They’re doing everything they can to try to take advantage of this time.

Are you surprised at all that Cam’s still waiting for an opportunity?
I wouldn’t call myself an expert in how the market of the NFL works. I do know that Cam Newton is an incredibly special talent. To see him up close for a year and being around him, his work ethic, his natural ability, his leadership ability — there’s a lot of things to like about Cam Newton. I don’t know if I’m surprised or not about the situation because I don’t know all the details of it. But I do know he’s a special talent and whatever he decides to do, that’s his business. I’m just excited to see where life takes him and I know he’ll do great because I know who he is as a person.

How would you describe Joe Brady’s offense?
I’ve enjoyed learning it. I’m more familiar with the way the offense is called in terms of the play structure than I was with the offense last year. Last year was the digit system, which I just wasn’t familiar with. Joe Brady’s offense is something I’ve done before, been familiarized with in the past in terms of the protections, the play calls. I’m just more familiar with the way he goes about doing it.

As far as style of offense, with his background being with the Saints and what he did at LSU last year, you’ll see a lot of those things show up in our offense this year. We’re watching a lot of Saints film. We’ve been watching a lot of LSU film. I think he’s going to bring some of the stuff he was doing at LSU and blend it with what he was doing with the Saints. It’s a fun offense. I haven’t gotten the chance to see his play-calling in action. That’s really the difference in offenses. I think everybody to an extent in the NFL has all the same plays. It comes down to play-calling and executing on game day with the guys you’ve got. I like Joe a lot. I think he’s a super-smart guy.

He was jimmy clausen bad last season but who knows maybe he can get better in Brady’s offense

Yea he couldn’t even complete a pass. After almost an entire season on the bench learning the offense, Grier should have been better than he was. But who knows, scheme might just have not fit his skill set and the nomenclature confused him so maybe he will be a decent backup.

This gives perspective on why he didn’t see the field much probably causing him to look worse than he actually was. Being a team in turmoil and at some points almost desperate throwing him out there when he voiced he clearly doesn’t understands the offense wasn’t a good look imo. Yes he had plenty of time to learn but it was like they just gave up on him completely last season and gave Kyle Allen every chance to get better without regards for Grier. This is turn makes me not so skeptical of him being a solid back up. Let’s see how he looks in the preseason (if there is one) and go from there.

Anyone would have been Jimmy Clausen bad behind that putrid Oline last season.

I don't want to completely disqualify how bad Grier looked last year, but yeah, I'll give him a "Clausen-bad" with an asterisk for being behind a historically bad offensive line.

I doubt he sticks. I was very much against playing him last year because it was so plain that he wouldn't be ready, but was and still am not closed minded to the possibility that in two more years it might be a different story.

Why interview him though? How many #3 guys get interviews? Odd.

nice to hear him admit that the offense we ran last year wasn't his style.

that plays a huge factor into a QB's peformance. OL does as well.

Who knows, maybe there is a reason we didn't draft a QB.

I for one can see PJ getting a shot some day...
