Perspective on Will Grier

I don't think you can write him off already but he wasn't anywhere close to ready to see the field last year and didn't inspire any confidence in his limited snaps. The track record for any qb out of college is pretty awful, even top 10 picks, but it's especially bad after the first round. You can't blame Hurney for trying to address the backup qb spot after Cam's injury issues started propping up. A proven vet would've been a safer bet, like Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I'm sure the upside of a potential long term starter/high end backup made a flier on a midround qb an attractive option. I wasn't thrilled with the pick at the time, and am less so now a year later, but I at least understood the rationale.

I can only assume you misunderstood my post cause I have no idea what you're trying to say.

My bad I misunderstood what you meant, I thought you meant we only look for white quarterbacks and I was confused. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

What’s funny is that he actually looked OK in his first start. Good ability to escape the rush. Two of his three picks were balls thrown perfectly that his pussy WRs let get stolen out of their hands. I don’t care what QB experiences that, it’s not his fault. I was largely alright with his first game. Hell, you take away the fourth-down attempts in the red zone, make them kicks like they should’ve been and it’s 23-12 in the fourth quarter providing STs showed up.

another interesting fact: it took Clausen until December of 2015 before he threw for as many yards as Grier did in his first game.

You have always liked Grier...I don't get it.  I said he would be out of the league in 3 years and I stand by that.

Not really sure what the Turner's saw in him. TBH he's not a great fit with our offense. His accuracy was abysmal last year. To be fair though he was also taking big hits and not getting much help. Either way we could stash him on PS this year if we carry two QBs. I really double anyone takes him from us with his horrible performance last year.

We watched completely different games man. Grier looked like hot garbage and it wasn't the receiver's fault.

We obviously did. A well-thrown ball right in the breadbasket stripped out of the WR’s hand is only the quarterback’s fault when significant personal dislike comes into play.

Why since Jimmy Clausen?  Are we only considering white quarterbacks or something?  We've had plenty of bad reaches in between Clausen and Grier.

*blinks*

ummmm... number of qb's drafted by the Panthers between Clausen and Grier not named Cam Newton: 0

Really then why did everyone give grief to Allen.  He was basically a rookie last year also.  He started one game last year...the last one and did well.  Did everyone have high expectations for him due to one game at the end of last year against NO.  Can't say Grier should have been cut slack and not Allen also.

Allen was considered a threat to Cam by a lot of people who love Cam. That’s the only difference. Also, there’s a reason Ron trades for Allen and likely never considered going after Grier. Allen is actually a year younger than Grier and Allen looked a thousand times better even with his flaws. Grier was a horrible pick with a bunch of interior OL left on the board and Maxx Crosby who was one of our private visits and a need at DE with Peppers gone and Addison a FA. Little and Grier could have netted us some solid prospects and will likely get us nothing more than a replacement level player and a bust.

The thing about the Grier pick was that the other third rounder was traded for Little.  For those who love third rounders.  Still, taking a flyer on a third rounder is not horribly stupid---I will go on the record as saying that Grier does not make the roster.  I think we try to put him on the PS and he gets nabbed by some team without a clue.  I would give Bonnefon some emergency reps once in a while at practice.  Save a roster spot.

I will say that this year's third rounder is a good'n.

Can I quote you as predicting he will be a Brown?  When it comes to QB's, maybe a Jag?

My problem with Grier is he did not address a need and he did keep us from potentially drafting someone who would.  None of that was his fault, nor were the conditions of the team when he was thrown onto the field.  I'm not saying he is an NFL QB at any level, just the fact that he was overvalued by the Panthers is not his fault.  Nor is the fact that he had zero NFL experience when we needed a QB with NFL experience (preferably a former starter) entering last year to supplement our young backup who had one game of experience.

I don't think Grier fits our current offense at all, and I'd be surprised if he was on the active roster when the season starts.  But who knows what rabbit Brady could get pull out of a hat.

I doubt he has any trade value at all (unless the Browns come a calling).  Allen's trade value was highest for one team (and may have only existed with one team), and luckily that's who called.  We know why that is.
