Given that we didn't do any better than the Colts on prioritizing the Oline to provide protection for our number one draft pick star qb either, probably about the same as he experienced in Indy would be my guess.

Yep. The Panthers and Colts both failed miserably to put an OL in front of their franchise QBs and we all saw what happened to both of them.

It was Ron Rivera supposedly spotted at the airport, ironically enough.

At the time, Rivera was one of the hottest coaching prospects a available.

As I remember it was someone in Pepper’s family that got into his ear and convinced him that he needed to go to a big market team if he wanted to get national attention and into the HOF.  Any internal team conflict was secondary.

I got this third hand from a friend, but:

Smitty and his wife were visiting a tattoo parlor back in the day/towards the end of Jake's decline. The friend that told me this short story got it from the tattoo artist that was working on Smitty's wife's tattoo.

Anyways, there is some small talk during the process, and of course it turns to football at times. The subject of Jake is brought up and Smitty, obviously frustrated, jokes something along the lines of "Man. Jake couldn't get it to Jerry Rice on Jerry's best day."

It is pretty mild and mundane, but I always believed this happened, and I felt 100% the same way at the time, even though I still liked Jake for what he gave us for all those year before. I still like Jake too to this day, but he outstayed his time way too long, especially if it was that obvious to his #1 at  the time.
