What is Tre Boston’s role?

4 of the 5 team Captains (2 cut 1 retired 1 traded) from last year are gone as Rhule is building his locker room culture.  Reid’s “loud voice “ was caught up in this transition.  Rhule doesn’t want to hear any...this is the way we used to do it or I’ve always done it this way.

I think the plan with Tre will be to hang onto him for two seasons while we hopefully get Kenny Robinson up to speed. Tre can be released after two seasons to save $5M. If everything works to plan, that will likely be what happens. With that said, 5th round picks aren't exactly sure things so I don't think anyone should be penciling in Robinson at FS for the next decade just yet.

We were a top ten defense three times in the last 9-10 years with a lot of proven talented players. Never once was it back to back seasons in the top 10. It’s not an easy ask to think we are going to be consistently top ten.

Valid point, but I personally see a solid foundation with a lot of potential. Maybe not two years but along the lines of 3-5.

I missed that we parted ways with Eric Reid whom we just signed to a three year extension in January of 2019.

Can anyone provide some insight as to why we cut him with 2 years left on his extension?!?  TIA.

Rhule didn’t want him.

Coach Rhule is on the record saying his goal is “a serious football place”....

....Reid and one or two (or four) others no longer fit.

I just think it's hilarious that this board was begging for a starting caliber safety over the past 15 years and now we have several talented safeties on the roster and suddenly it's an issue.

I love having talent at safety, I’m just asking what his role is for this team now and in the future.

Pure speculation to follow:

Rhule's success at the college level was predicated on inspiration and getting his players to buy into his system and approach. Under normal circumstances new coaching regimes often look to shed themselves of established veterans who aren't essential in order to establish their own culture. For a coach such as Rhule, who is unproven and untested at the pro level, this would be doubly the case. Reid is known to be an outspoken strong willed person who does not shy away from his views and who is not easily influenced by others. He is exactly the kind of player that such a new HC would look to remove as a potential problem child to establishing his own culture. Add in that he plays one of the most fungible positions in the NFL in safety and imo the coaching staff views this as addition by subtraction.

Personally I think it's a shame not just for the wasted cap space but also new coaches and GM's arbitrarily replacing proven players is a pet peeve of mine. I admire Reid for his principles and sticking by them despite the cost to his professional career. I was excited when we signed him but to be fair his performance on the field has had it's ups and downs. I hope he finds another team who can use his talents.

Tre should be the “roamer” when we run defenses with 5 or more dbs. Based on how Snows previous defenseive looks have been I can see him being a backfield general for us. It’s hard to deny he’s been one of the best free safeties the past few years when it comes to interceptions.
