Yeah but there wont be anyone in the stands to watch him so he'll have to give the money back. I'll be shocked if there is even any more seasons until 3078.

Am I doing it right?

Ps I wrote this wearing my beotsch mask and gloves. Rona for lyfe! Report all persons within 5 feet of you to your local party official!

Fully guaranteeing the contract is a good move to screw other teams when you draft a sure bet first rounder.  It gives the other first rounders leverage that will hurt other teams who drafted poorly in the first round, and inflates the value of players whose position might not normally justify the contract price/terms.

For example, imagine the team who picked 8 or 9th draft a TE. Now they might have to pay aN unproven Rookie TE $20 million guaranteed for 4 years.  That’s a lot of risk to put on your salary cap.

First-round pick Derrick Brown and the Carolina Panthers reached agreement on a 4-year, fully-guaranteed deal worth $23.621 million, per his agent
@RosenhausSports
. Brown is the first player selected in the first round this year to agree to terms.

Guys out there want to be aligned with The Firm...

...soon the team will be attracting top free agents at below market deals like the patriots used to.

AaaaaLLLL  ABOARD!!!!

I've always been thankful that the rookie salary cap was implemented before Newton was drafted (right before, as I recall). Heaven only knows what his rookie contract would have looked like otherwise. I think Bradford got something like fifty million the year before.

Granted, Newton might not appreciate it in quite the same way

It actually set in motion a new way to win Super Bowl as well. Instead of building a team around a QB most now build the team first and then draft the QB. That way you get 5 years to win it all on a cheap contract. Also limited trading back into the first round.

I like the new rookie contract pay scale. One, it keeps from having to pay top picks like automatic future HOFers. Two, it greatly reduces the risk of holdouts because offset language is about the only major variable to potentially be negotiated.

Agreed! The dates of actual cash payout is also negotiable. I think that is usually what holds deals up, especially with some of the cheap ___ owners. Thankfully we are not in that club any longer.

Yea its why RBs dont get selected first round anymore.

Question:

Why exactly would the Panthers fully guarantee Brown's deal when they don't have to and it's not standard procedure in the NFL? Did they get something significant in return? With the rookie wage scale, Brown's money was pretty much already determined right? Can anybody shed light on this? I feel like I'm missing something.

I thought all rookie deals were fully guaranteed

Are they now? This might be one of those things I missed not paying as close attention as I used to. Okay thanks for letting me know.

I'm at work and can't fact check that, so I could be wrong

Yep, no team wants to 'David Carr' their rookie QBs anymore.  By the time the team should be tuning the corner in year 3 of a rebuild, the QB is shell-shocked and seeing ghosts...if not completely beaten physically.

Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes are perfect examples of teams that had pretty solid rosters and then drafted their future franchise QB.  Even if we take a QB next draft, I'd want him to sit behind Teddy for the better part of the season, if not the entire year.

I always thought Ben Rothlisberger was a pretty good example of this as well. Walked into a well stocked roster as a rookie and for the first few years they just needed him to not lose, as opposed to asking him to win it. Worked out pretty well for his overall development as a qb I'd say.

    • Kraven has awful shitty comic book movie vibes all over it. It's just more of whatever studio owns the rights to the Spiderman set, but no longer actually has Spiderman anymore. Wicked is probably no more enjoyable. 3 hour long musicals are tough to endure.
    • One of those guys who throws a pass that makes you yell "OMG" then immediately follows it with one that makes you go "WTF" 😳 Essentially the Brett Favre prototype...
    • The Giants games are an interesting comparison for sure. We could compare the Chiefs vs the Bucs as well, since at least both teams are largely the same as they are now, rather than the Giants whose coach lost his mind after losing to us. 30-24 KC in overtime. Hunt had 106 yards and Mahomes had 291. Baker threw for 200 yards, but 2 TDs. Their leading rusher had 25 yards or something. Our offense outperformed what the Bucs did vs KC, but being a division game we won't have the benefit of being overlooked. If our D plays how it did in the 4th quarter I think we can get some stops.  Can Bryce carry a second game? I'd rather not find out and have Chuba carry the load, but we'll see.
