Donte Jackson

Recommended Posts

Donte is the kind of corner that will look amazing playing behind a great pass rush and horrible playing behind a bad one. That's what his hyper-aggressive mentality does with corners. Hopefully 2 things happen: 1) we develop a good pass rush with our recent additions, and 2) Donte learns when to switch that mentality on and off depending on the situation.

We were 2nd in the NFL in sacks last season. He looked horrible.

We were the 6th most blitz-happy team in the NFL and still only generated a middle of the pack pressure rate on both 4 man and blitz defenses per FO.

Sack numbers are fun but not that meaningful.

Where did you see this? PFF had us ranked middle of the pack in blitz percentage with the Ravens being #1 by a wide margin.

We'll see how it turns out. It definitely felt like we overdrafted him at the time. It seemed most had him slated as a mid-round pick, primarily due to very serious concerns about his lack of size/strength at the NFL level. His speed is elite (his 40 time was in the 97th percentile for NFL CBs). Every other measurable was well below par for an NFL CB. He was in the 33rd percentile for height. 4th percentile for weight (meaning 96% of NFL CBs are heavier). 5th percentile for wingspan. 2nd percentile for arm length (the dude has T-Rex arms). 4th percentile for bench press (that's really bad for a guy with T-Rex arms, bench pressing heavily favors guys with shorter arms).

Out sheer curiosity I measured my own arm length using NFL methodology. Just shy of 31". I'll call it 30.75". At 5'10", I'm an inch shorter than Jackson and I'd consider my arm length fairly average for my height (my wingspan is roughly equal to my height). Jackson's arms are 29.5". Dude really is T-Rex armed. He doesn't really look like it, but I think his narrow frame makes his arms look longer than they really are.

I’m looking forward to seeing how he progresses. Most have written him off, but sometimes a change can do a player good. It also takes some time for corners to develop.

I definitely haven't written him off, but I do think this is likely his make or break season. Definitely hoping the new staff can help mold him into a consistent NFL CB. The guy definitely shows flashes, consistency is his big issue. He definitely runs hot and cold and last year was a lot more of the latter than the former.

The kid has all the talent in the world. Great ball instincts but he depends too much of his game on talent and athleticism. If he will keep his mouth shut, humble himself and listen to the coaches, he can be great. A lot of guys in the pros, do not have the athleticism to play but they study the game/opponents and improve technique.

Ridicule me all you want, but I think Jackson makes a Josh Norman like leap this year and becomes a top 5 zone CB in 2021. Remember Norman had his beatings his first two years, but year three it began to click. Jackson has the skill and swagger, just needs to focus it.

It’s like seeing a top of the line, physically fit boxer with the full capability of mastering technicals of boxing throwing drunken haymakers until he gets blasted in the face. Frustrating. Norman was the same way. Personally I think Jackson could be better than Norman. Unfortunately the reason he isn’t is for extremely unpredictable reasons.

I think our answer to CB1 is not on the roster currently but will be by September.

DJax is probably a CB2 at his best but honestly, can be a beast in the slot. LSU is DBU, so I have faith that he isn't as bad as his sophomore year. was last year. He will be 25 this coming November, so I do think we need to figure out his place in the secondary sooner rather than later.

I look forward to the day when we can hopefully build rosters where we're not searching for starters off of the trash pile deep into the off-season.

We had the 4th worst pressure rating in 2018.

Then last year were looking good until mid October. Which is interestingly when both Burns and Short were out of action.

We took a crazy nose dive after the Niners game and remainder of the season.
