It was a culmination of things as far as our fanbase goes. For one, he was the first superstar QB this team has ever had. Losing him was uncharted waters for the fanbase. And secondly, people took the Cam situation and politicized it throughout his entire career. If you didn’t want to extend Cam then you were obviously a racist. That’s what people started boiling it down to.

But it’s hard to accuse the entire league of being racist now as nobody is signing him. The reality is, I wanted Cam to finish his last year here. But I certainly didn’t want to extend him. At the end of the day, Cam is likely going to have to accept a 1 year deal if he wants to play football this season. He hasn’t been healthy for three seasons now. Nobody is committing their future to him under those circumstances. As you say, it’s not unusual. But between losing our first superstar QB and making Cam a racism detector, this fanbase lost all sense of the situation and couldn’t see things objectively

When people like MVPcaffrey posting “my quarterback is white“ after every Allen win last year, it’s hard not to believe the people who wanted Cam gone aren’t racist.

This is true:  It's not hard to believe that SOME people who wanted Cam gone are racist.

This is not true:  ALL people who wanted to move on from Cam are racist.

Of course their are racist fans in every fanbase and I will be the first person to tell you that they are fugging idiots. But then you have some longtime sensible posters who have been Cam supporters since day one that said “nah. We can’t extend him. Not until he proves his health” and a huge portion of this board called us racist as well.

Thats not thinking objectively about the situation. We knew what every other team in the league is showing they know. Cam is a huge question mark and too risky to invest long term money in. That’s why he’s still a FA. But rather than see that, most just played the race card and swore losing Cam would ruin this franchise for the next decade. Some are still posting that, citing racism and believing Cam is a lock for MVP in the next year or two. That’s putting your blinders on. Nobody is even signing Cam and clearly it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

I hope Cam signs for the Chargers and balls out. But I’m glad we didn’t jump the gun and sign him to a 4 year deal. It just wouldn’t have made sense at all

Don’t extend Cam but sign Teddy cause you’re racist? People have insecure logic.

Cam had a different and big personality. One some people will love and others will be annoyed. I think Cam is annoying as hell. I also think Rivera is annoying as hell. I think Luke is boring as hell...doesn’t mean anything though cause they can win games.

But fanboys who loved him can’t fathom others who don’t, so it must have been for other reasons. It’s impossible to be annoyed by Cam’s personality and not be fetishized by the fanboys.

I understand that. I'm just saying it's the only place that makes sense anymore. Where else could he go where he has a legitimate chance at starting?

I wouldn't be so sure he has a legitimate chance of starting here.

Our OC didn't seem to think so.

At this point, honestly, I think the only landing place that makes sense for Cam Newton...is Carolina.

Sure they parted ways on terrible terms, but now that he's seen his value in the market, and perhaps understands the realities of his situation, maybe both sides can put down their swords and agree to a one-year deal.

I know it would probably never happen. But if you think about it, it's a win for everyone.

The Panthers get a former MVP QB at bargain basement price and don't have to start their new era turning the reins over to a new QB.

Cam gets a paycheck, and game time to prove he's healthy so he's got more value a year from now.

Teddy earns rock star money for sitting on the bench.

If things work out great, you can extend Cam. If they don't, we draft the QB of the future as we always planned and Cam can enter a QB market that is potentially looking for more starters. (You think Brady is playing more than 1 year in Tampa?)

Yea no way that is going to happen. Cam would be great back up insurance for anyone except the Panthers. Too much of a distraction and just gives Teddy more difficultly establishing a leadership role with his teammates.

I agree with you mostly. Though I personally enjoyed Cams on the field antics but I can see how they would rub some people the wrong way.

I’m just pointing to the fans viewpoint. I think a lot of fans couldn’t believe we would cut Cam or that anyone would support that move. If we did, it must be because of racism. In the same breath, so many think we treated Cam wrong in how things went down. I won’t agree or disagree, I just don’t think it’s unique to Cam. Dalton is the prime example. This is sports. Call it right or wrong, but this happens all the time to all different players across all leagues. It might feel cold, but that’s the business.

I’m sad we lost Cam but I was more or less ready to move on. It was my opinion that his body had finally broken down. And I did want to finish his deal out to make sure, but if it came down to cutting him or extending him, I was 100% in favor of moving on.

All I know now, is I’m very excited by the direction this team has taken in the rebuild. I loved the draft and I think this team is putting serious emphasis on youth moving forward. Something the last regime sorely lacked.

I agree. There is only one thing I blame the FO for in the Cam era and that’s ignoring the oline (and in turn relying on Cam to constantly carry the running game). Your QB shouldn’t ever be your leading rusher.

It’s honestly the single thing I can say I’m salty about. I’m tired of a trash oline. And I am not confident they’re not still trying to get by without one. Whoever is next at franchise QB I hope they learned their lesson.

100%

I think the league as a whole has learned over the last decade. I mentioned this a bit ago in another thread but I think the league had this mindset that if you had a duel threat QB then you could ignore investing in assets on offense and just load up on the defensive side of the ball. That fuel threat QB would generate enough offense so that you could stack your defense and win games that way. Obviously this isn’t true. But you look at what Vick, McNabb, McNair etc had to work with xD what teams are giving guys like Jackson and Mahomes now. I think the whole mentality of the league has shifted in that regard. It’s a shame we didn’t buck the trend sooner

Question: why do you think Cam is annoying?

Wonder who they got now as a legit back up in case Burrow shits the bed.

Current backup would be Ryan Finley.

I could see them going after a guy like Joe Flacco. They'd know him well from his years in the division.

@onmyown it’s pretty feminine and contradictory to be this opinionated about sports players let alone ones on your team. There’s plenty of players out there that have differing personalities but if they play for your team and you dislike them do you revel in their success or disown the team because of the players annoyances? What you’re saying is very confusing especially when none of Cam’s “shenanigans” has cost the team anything. People that are this strongly opinionated about another man are clearly interested in the wrong thing poo like this is akin to a female being “triggered” by a reality star personality and tuning in each episode just to complain about them. Enjoy football dude and stfu or find another outlet to make asinine complaints.
