Did Rhule lie about Newton?

I loved Cam. He is my favorite Panther all time. In saying that, I don't have an issue with how this was handled. Did it look bad? Absolutely. But are we sure of the circumstances? No. What do I mean by circumstances.

Would Cam have played out his remaining contract?

Did he want an extension and how much?

Those are the most important questions. For all we know, the Panthers were hoping he would have a prove it year but Cam wouldn't accept that. Rhule wanted to coach Cam but once they realized Cam would only play with an extension, they moved on.

Got to do what is in the best interest of the team. Cam needed Smitty to leave to be the leader he could be. Same goes for Rhule. He needs to do this with his players.

Well done and end of discussion. I'll miss Cam but it's over. The blame rests solely on the shoulders of the coaches and staff that ran him into the ground. He deserved better. We deserved better. Nothing to do with Rhule.

It doesn't benefit the team when it causes surgery to be delayed such that recovery time bleeds into the pre-season, or results in a much worse injury as a result of still be played.

Yep. He should've had surgery in September. Rehabbed, recovered, and signed somewhere else after passing a physical for at least 10 teams by the time COVID19 shut it all down.

But he wanted the Carolina Panthers to win a Super Bowl instead. He knew Kyle Alken wasn't the answer, particularly behind that patchwork o-line. What a selfish a-hole!

Rhule said the only thing he could have logically said at that point. It very well may have been genuine or may have not been. We won't know without getting inside his head. I have to believe that a coach would be thrilled to work with Cam under the circumstances that he's both healthy and willing to play under his current contract. Both things seemed to be major question marks. I wish we truly knew the answer to the 2nd one because then the Bridgewater decision would make a lot more sense to me.

The way I see it, there's 3 possibilities:

1. Rhule wanted his own guy all along and felt like Bridgewater was a better fit for his system/ vision.

2. Rhule wanted to coach Cam but Cam refused to play on his current contract and the team was uncomfortable committing given his injury concerns so decided to move on.

3. Rhule was happy to coach Cam and had every intention of doing so at first, but once it became clear Bridgewater could be had for about the same price, they decided to move in that direction.

Personally, I hope 2 is the case, because while Bridgewater's floor is currently higher, Cam's ceiling is way higher and letting him play out the last year of his contract and prove he's returned to health always seemed like the smartest play IF he was willing. If he wasn't, I completely understand moving on. If that's true though, Cam really misplayed his hand, particularly considering the contract Jameis got. The market for Cam looks bleak; I don't see him earning back the $19 million he lost from us.

Apathetic.  First time in my 8 years of marriage I didn't get the draft hat for the draft or even give the team much thought.

Ive been a zealot over this team, have enjoyed each new generation until now. It was probably death by a thousand cuts.

and Marty.

We were in a perfect position to tank, and I think that's what we (Tepper) fully planned on doing....but Rhule wasn't going to have it, and Tepper wanted Rhule.

Rhule wants to instill a culture, and I totally get that, if you are starting from scratch, culture may be the very best thing to start with.

I don't think it's the best strategy for winning a Super Bowl, but if this is what we are going to do...so be it.

When has tanking been a successful strategy in the NFL though? I don't disagree that we were primed to consider tanking at this juncture but I also acknowledge the Panthers plan to forego that path actually has some logic.

Tanking doesn't work very well in the NFL for a few reasons. 1) One player does not have as big of an impact as say, the NBA. There are 22 starters and even the most important position, the qb, needs an offensive line and receivers to be successful. So a #1 pick alone is unlikely to single handedly change the fortunes of a team. 2) Teams' ability to predict which collegiate players will be successful pros is terrible across the board. 1st round picks only hit about half of the time and even #1 overall picks bust occasionally and rarely end up being the best player from a draft class, even when highly touted. 3) There are too many positions to fill. If your team is terrible across the board, realistically you might be able to fill a quarter of it with draft picks and free agent pickups in one offseason. It would essentially take 4 offseasons to fill an entire roster if you completely tear your team down, so by the time you're done, the rookies from the first year will be in line for expensive 2nd contracts and you won't be able to afford them all.

Cam still being unsigned is strange

It has to do with the physical, plus him wanting to be a starter. Most teams (after the draft) either have the guy they want or one they want to develop. It’s going to take a starter getting hurt in camp and he should get his chance. He just has to stay in shape (never a problem for him) and sit back and wait.
