Did Rhule lie about Newton?

Mr. Scot

Yes.

So do ALL other coaches.

It was handled worse with Teppers comments too. My biggest issue is all this was for the attempt to get a late rounder for the best QB in the 25 years of this franchise. Cam or his agents didnt help either with asking for a extension after years of injuries. Another steve smith deal, no team know how to handle these deals.

This. Lying or not this organization has treated both its greatest players, Cam and Smitty, like sh!t on their exits.

To be fair, treating him badly is a different discussion than whether they were lying about it to fans.

Word was that the team did allow him to believe they were keeping him but then one day came to him and said otherwise. Newton was reportedly so upset that he had to be consoled.

That's crap. No argument about that.

I think they were open to keeping Cam and Rhule was honest about wanting to coach him. I think something happened between negotiations last minute. Either way it’s one or the other. I don’t want to believe or be a fan of a FO that operates that way. But since we don’t know all  the facts we have to accept it’s a possibility they did lie.

But for me in order for them to be that deceptive then Cam would have had to have been a real asshole and from all that we can tell he was a total pro and a great teammate and leader. The way it currently stands he absolutely deserved better.

The official team story is that the final decision wasn't made until after Newton released his "commitment" video.

"Officially..."

My guess is that no one was certain what would happen with Cam, so the coach of course talked about how much he looked forward to working him.   In the end though, I don't really care that much.

I mean I like Cam, and there is a part of me that still thinks he can perform at a high level if he can stay healthy.  But there is no guarantee of that, so the team has to do what is best for the team, just as Cam has to do what is best for Cam.  They couldn't come to an agreement that covered the needs of both, so Cam is no longer a Panther.

My initial reaction was that he lied. But then reports came out that Cam wanted an extension (commitment) which basically legitimately gave the team the reason to move on. I always said if Cam was healthy and willing to play out the last year of his contract, then they would have probably kept him.  So I think he probably meant what he said at the combine but circumstances changes regarding Cam.

I loved Cam. He is my favorite Panther all time. In saying that, I don't have an issue with how this was handled. Did it look bad? Absolutely. But are we sure of the circumstances? No. What do I mean by circumstances.

Would Cam have played out his remaining contract?

Did he want an extension and how much?

Those are the most important questions. For all we know, the Panthers were hoping he would have a prove it year but Cam wouldn't accept that. Rhule wanted to coach Cam but once they realized Cam would only play with an extension, they moved on.

Got to do what is in the best interest of the team. Cam needed Smitty to leave to be the leader he could be. Same goes for Rhule. He needs to do this with his players.

After he was injured in Week 2, the speculation got started that we'd never see him in a Panthers uniform again.

The original word was that he wouldn't play without an extension and the Panthers weren't willing to give him one. Both Roaring Riot and Igo backed it up, with Jourdan Rodrigue adding that Hurney and Rivera were willing to extend him but it was Tepper who refused. The belief was that unless one side or the other blinked, they were headed for a potentially ugly divorce.

Around the time Newton gave an interview on Sirius where he talked about staying a Panther, insiders seemed to indicate that Newton had backed down. He was now willing to play out the last year of his contract without any guarantees, and the team was prepared to accept that arrangement.

Then came the "can't I get a little commitment" video and well, you know the rest...or at least the team's version of the rest.

What makes it worse is the Bridgewater signing. He’s not in Cams league. And I believe that to be true no matter the system. That’s where I think Rhule, Brady, and Tepper were naive if not biased against Cam. I wouldn’t go as far to say they bought into false narratives about him. But there was an obvious disconnect between him and new regime. Those false narratives are true for the rest of the league though. He’s being black balled right now and it’s bs.

This is the only objective answer. No one has insider knowledge on Newton’s longevity and most don’t have access to conversations that took place leading up to his departure. Everything is pure speculation. Time to get over it. It’s done.
