Long-time, Hurney hater here. but...

I wouldn't be surprised if he stays another year. With the way this year and season will likely go, I think we hold course for another year. Also, who are we replacing him with? In his interview yesterday Rhule said he'd rather have Hurney than look for a new GM. The GM process should be a grooming process here.

Im a perennial marty hater but his team did a good job this year.  Maybe Rhule and MH will have a good relationship working together on GM duties.  That in no way means we shouldnt try to upgrade the GM spot but im not as sure as i once was that some of martys boondoggles had to do with a certain old senile owner and coaches who are living in 2002.  Time will tell

I think the Panthers had a great draft this past weekend. A few things that are tempering my Hurney love...

  • We won't know the true value of these players for a few years, so to think that we drafted 7 players that can contribute for sure is hard to not get caught up in. I do think we have 3 starters and 2 more eventual starters, as well as 1 rotational guy... so I too think we had a homerun draft this past weekend.
  • Can you recall a draft that Hurney was running that has ever been this successful? Watching this year's draft was like watching a bizarro episode of the draft.
  • Marty's previous record is below .500 and is the pure definition of "mediocrity". One draft/offseason is not going to change that.

Now, if these players come to fruition and the balance of the free agents ball out and fit nicely, then his results should show for it. Taking one draft vs. two decades of frustrating moves, overpaying and overdrafting won't get wiped clean.

I will say that I am not a fan of Marty as a GM. I do think he is a nice guy and well-liked by the organization. I wouldn't mind him in a different title/role, but I still do not have confidence that he can consistently make wise decisions and hang with other GMs when it comes to deals and negotiating.

I don't think he's the worst GM in the league, but I do think he can be replaced and we wouldn't lose a step. There's a reason he got no love from the league when he was let go the first time. He fits in well in Carolina, and I hope that Tepper does offer him a position within the organization that utilizes what Marty is good at. I just prefer it's not the GM running the show.

To be fair as well, I am very happy with this offseason.

I like the CMC re-signing. I like the Bridgewater and PJ signing. Love the Anderson signing. The Okung trade was a wise move and I think Miller can fill in at RG nicely for us.

I think Marty has done wonders with this roster and drafted unbelievably well. I see us being competitive in 2020, though not necessarily winning a ton of games.

I am in wait-and-see mode with Hurney for the future. Up until now, he has been bad as much as he has been good, so I think not holding my breath after one good offseason is understandable.

I am by no means extending him beyond this year.

Based on early good feelings after the Draft? Every fanbase in the league thinks they hit their draft out of the park on an annual basis.

Plenty of people had good feelings about the drafting of Everette Brown and Armanti Edwards too.

Hurney could come out of the draft and walk on water and end COVID-19 and you would still want him fired.  Just like you wanted Ron fired.  You might not be the best judge of him out there.

It's time for someone new but if Tepper chose to keep him on for another year or 2 it would not be the end of the world to me.

If peace and togetherness in the workplace is a hallmark of at least decent management, Hurney gets a good mark in that. Winning consistently is much, much tougher. Let's face it, winning at all in the NFL is hard to do and few of us armchair coaches and GMs could do the job at all.

It's not. Neither is all the players being happy.

The whole "okay, maybe we aren't winning but hey, at least everybody is happy" thing was the standard Jerry Richardson set, and he got exactly the results that kind of atmosphere gets you.

If that's your standard for "good", then by all means we can go on another 50 years just like the last 25 and all just be happy that we're in the NFL.

I think in terms of drafting....Marty has generally done whatever his HC wanted to a large degree.  Whatever needs/holes/emphasis that particular coach wanted.  Marty executed.

I think coaches like a GM like Marty.

Tepper needs to bring in (and I think he alluded to it) someone to deal w/ the aspects Marty doesn't do as well with.  The numbers/contracts.

MHS..... think about this- it took close to 30 years for Marty to FINALLY nail a draft and that is to be determined.

Plus for all those giving 100% credit to Rhule, you are wrong. This was an collaboration and Marty had plenty of input.

Lastly I will not let this draft change my feeling on Marty and the HISTORY of bad moves. I never wanted him back and still want him out of the GM role. Give him a different job and this draft is a partying gift.

can you be mad at him after that draft?  Of course, his job involves many other duties than drafting players---but most Hurney haters (myself included) loath MH for everything he has done after round 1 of the draft.  A few contracts and extensions, but 80% of my loathing was based on the draft.

Sure, maybe the difference was Rhule and his staff.  But whatever it was, whatever combination they used, it seemed to work.   If credit goes to Rhule, credit goes to Marty for listening.  If credit goes to Marty for finding the right players (as we seem to have done), credit goes to Rhule for his communication.  The bottom line--it seems to have worked.  While other teams were mucking through the later rounds in a predictable fashion, the Panthers went WVU/XFL (21 year old S) and found a 335lb NT who can run a 4.8 40.  The grabbed an undrafted WR with 1600 yards and 17 TDs in college--who does that?

I am not a Hurney fan, but how do you not extend his deal after what we saw?  Maybe he was a good boy knowing he was on double-secret probation, or maybe he and Rhule are a good team.  Of course, it is easy when these guys have  never played a down and the coach's W-L record is 0-0.  Still, I think the force to reel Marty into the fold has arrived.  Now we can benefit from his experience and restrain his impulsive tendencies on draft day--maybe.

Are there any haters who are thinking, "Maybe, just maybe..."?

Totally agree, and I posted something similar on Sunday.

However it works, the Marty/Rhule combo worked better than the Marty/Rivera combo ever did. Then you look at what the Redskins did in the draft, Chase Young is one of those first round no-brainers we are accustomed to, followed by a bunch of wth picks just like we are used to.

Then you look at UDFA signings. Marty was more aggressive and signed more than we are accustomed to seeing from the Panthers. Washington and Rivera signed a group similar to what we are used to here.

Never liked Hurney, but looking at all of this, was it Marty or Ron this whole time?

Let's see how it plays out on the field. I think he's an above average GM, but I catch a lot of flack for that. And if I need to defend the position I've taken, please feel free to research what I've said in countless other threads.

Mind you, I say he's an above average one, not a great one. Below average GMs rarely stick around too long and average ones tend to stay for long careers simply because it is a very hard position to fill. One sign of a terrible GM, though, is having multiple instances of pre-season holdouts or extended, cantankerous contract deliberations. We, here at Carolina, have generally been blessed with that -- the only exceptions having been the Julius Peppers tagging situation and the embarassing but necessary Josh Norman theatrics that led to a lucrative tag being rescinded (and that was on Gettleman).

If peace and togetherness in the workplace is a hallmark of at least decent management, Hurney gets a good mark in that. Winning consistently is much, much tougher. Let's face it, winning at all in the NFL is hard to do and few of us armchair coaches and GMs could do the job at all.

Oh, I don't know.  There are a raft of regular posters on here who all think (with years of basement experience playing Madden) that they easily could do a better job as GM.

And most of them see themselves as better QBs, better WRs, better tacklers, and way better blockers, too.

The fact that they know all about the cap and dead $ overcomes the lack of any real on-the-job experience in personnel mgmt, hiring, or playing the sport.

I exempt all you former EvecVPs of corporate planning -- you know who you are.

It's kind of telling too to look at the 'Skins draft this year. It resembles what the Panthers normally would do and what I envisioned us doing. Not necessarily the picks, but the pattern that we follow.

Slam dunk 1st rounder.

Rounds 2-7: Filling needs and trying to spread out the picks evenly to address holes vs. BPA.....very scattered.

It's not a matter of "giving him the axe".

Hurney's contract is up after this season. Unless the Panthers extend him or give him a new job, he won't be here next year. Mind you, Jerry Richardson allowed him to work without a contract (hence why Darin Gantt called him "GM for life" as long as Richardson was around). I'm not so sure David Tepper would do the same.

I could live with assigning him to a lesser role, but I'm not sure Marty would be agreeable. Per his own statements, he likes being in charge of the whole thing.

That may be the reason behind Tepper's odd prior statements that he'd "hate to lose him". He might want Marty to take a different job but Marty may not agree with being demoted.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
