Long-time, Hurney hater here. but...

can you be mad at him after that draft?  Of course, his job involves many other duties than drafting players---but most Hurney haters (myself included) loath MH for everything he has done after round 1 of the draft.  A few contracts and extensions, but 80% of my loathing was based on the draft.

Sure, maybe the difference was Rhule and his staff.  But whatever it was, whatever combination they used, it seemed to work.   If credit goes to Rhule, credit goes to Marty for listening.  If credit goes to Marty for finding the right players (as we seem to have done), credit goes to Rhule for his communication.  The bottom line--it seems to have worked.  While other teams were mucking through the later rounds in a predictable fashion, the Panthers went WVU/XFL (21 year old S) and found a 335lb NT who can run a 4.8 40.  The grabbed an undrafted WR with 1600 yards and 17 TDs in college--who does that?

I am not a Hurney fan, but how do you not extend his deal after what we saw?  Maybe he was a good boy knowing he was on double-secret probation, or maybe he and Rhule are a good team.  Of course, it is easy when these guys have  never played a down and the coach's W-L record is 0-0.  Still, I think the force to reel Marty into the fold has arrived.  Now we can benefit from his experience and restrain his impulsive tendencies on draft day--maybe.

Are there any haters who are thinking, "Maybe, just maybe..."?

Whatever you're smoking or drinking, you should stop now.

Focusing only on the draft--what did you see that suggests he should NOT be renewed?

I am on the same page, Scot--but I am trying to look at it as if I am the owner.  Hurney playing singles is a disaster, but what if he is a better doubles player (tennis reference to get you thinking of Hurney in shorts)

I am just curious to see if the draft changed any minds about Hurn the Burn.

Everyone knows I will defend Hurney, but his time is up.  Its time for new faces in this organization

You abandon him NOW?  After (arguably) the best draft in Panther history?  But you liked him up to now?  (Not what you said, but am I wrong?)

I am just stirring the pot to see if attitudes changed.  Mr. Scot--negative--but he has not changed his socks in several months--I assume.

Based on early good feelings after the Draft? Every fanbase in the league thinks they hit their draft out of the park on an annual basis.

Plenty of people had good feelings about the drafting of Everette Brown and Armanti Edwards too.

I think hurney gets a raw deal around here, so I defend him.  I have said before that this needs to be his last season here

You don’t extend a GM based off of one draft in which we haven’t seen any of the players even take a single practice rep yet... I really liked the draft. I don’t love Hurney, don’t hate him either. His record speaks for itself, if we can upgrade at the GM spot we should do so.

Extend his contract based on one theoretically good draft?!?!  Hell fug no.  First of all, there is a lot more to GMing than the draft. Second of all, we don’t know this was a good draft anyway. All seven could turn out terrible or get injured or beat their girlfriend and that would make the picks wasted.  I love the draft haul, but we only speculate they were good picks. We certainly don’t handicap the team going forward based on one presumably good draft.

Let's see how it plays out on the field. I think he's an above average GM, but I catch a lot of flack for that. And if I need to defend the position I've taken, please feel free to research what I've said in countless other threads.

Mind you, I say he's an above average one, not a great one. Below average GMs rarely stick around too long and average ones tend to stay for long careers simply because it is a very hard position to fill. One sign of a terrible GM, though, is having multiple instances of pre-season holdouts or extended, cantankerous contract deliberations. We, here at Carolina, have generally been blessed with that -- the only exceptions having been the Julius Peppers tagging situation and the embarassing but necessary Josh Norman theatrics that led to a lucrative tag being rescinded (and that was on Gettleman).

If peace and togetherness in the workplace is a hallmark of at least decent management, Hurney gets a good mark in that. Winning consistently is much, much tougher. Let's face it, winning at all in the NFL is hard to do and few of us armchair coaches and GMs could do the job at all.

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
