Untouchable

Sound off.  Let's hear your early predictions.  There's still two more spots open to reach 90 so of course subject to change...

QB (2) – Teddy Bridgewater, PJ Walker: Hurney likes 3 and won’t want to admit his mistake from a year ago, but here's hoping there is a receiver they don’t want to lose.

RB (4) – Christian McCaffery, Reggie Bonnafon, Rodney Smith, Jordan Scarlett:  Davis has too big of a cap hit to keep.  Smith is in a close fight for RB2.

WR (6) – DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Curtis Samuel, Seth Roberts, Pharoh Cooper, Omar Bayless:  Bayless beats out Kirkwood for the final spot.  The versatility of McCaffery and Bonnafon means the 6th WR could be lost in favor of Grier.

TE (3) – Ian Thomas, Seth DeValve, Cam Sutton:  Sutton beats out Manhertz and DeValve absorbs Armah’s role.

OL (10) – Russell Okung, Dennis Daley, Matt Paradis, John Miller, Taylor Moton, Greg Little, Chris Reed, Fred Mauigoa, Brandon Bowen, Sam Tecklenburg: All but 1 of the starters in this unit has question marks.  Help is probably on the way for the backups.  Anyone listed after Little is in trouble.

_____

DL (9)– Yetur Gross-Matos, Derrick Brown, Kawaan Short, Brian Burns, Efe Obada, Stephen Weatherly, Bravvion Roy, Zach Kerr, Chris Smith: Here’s another spot Grier can make the roster. Smith could become expendable because they have a linebacker who can be used heavily in this group too.

LB (7) – Shaq Thompson, Tahir Whitehead, Jermaine Carter, Christian Miller, Andre Smith, Chris Orr, Sam Franklin: Orr beats out Kunaszyk, Franklin’s versatility steals the last spot.

DB (9) – Donte Jackson, Troy Pride, Juston Burris, Tre Boston, Jeremy Chinn, Stanley Thomas-Oliver, Kenny Robinson, Natrell Jamerson, Cole Luke: This unit looks rough.  Help better be on the way here too and that means Jamerson and Luke are on notice.

_____

Specialist (3) – Slye, Palardy, Jansen: Cheaper K wins the spot.  Rest is obvious.

Little should be on that "In Trouble," list too.

I appreciate you getting the ball rolling on this and I see your perspective and understand it.  I would say that you seem to think a lot of undrafted free agents will make the roster, beating out current veterans.  I think 3, maybe 4, but this suggests 9 will make the active roster.  That is indeed ambitious.

I think most will populate the PS--

I would say that WR  Bayless, OL Bowen (or the Auburn G), LB Orr, and maybe a TE like Sutton.

I mean, you also have all draft picks making the team---and that I can live with....we shall see.

Thanks for putting it out there.

The UDFAs is more of an indication of how poor the team still looks after the draft. I have 8 listed because I'm just going off who is on the roster currently. There's probably at least 3 vets still to come (2 OL, 1 DB).

I'm with you and would guess 4 UDFAs when all is said and done with Smith, Bayless, Sutton, Bowen, Maugiao and Orr having the best shot.

26 on offensive

3 QBs- 2 gloves, Walker, and Grier. If theres any year the panthers can carry a extra QB its this one.

4 RBs- CMC, Bonnafon, Scarlett, Rodney Smith. Davis is cut to save 3 million cause Smith showed promise.

4 TEs- Thomas, Manhertz, DeValve, Ricci. Extra spot gos here

9 OL- Paradis, Larsen, Little, Daley, Miller, Reed, Okung, Moton, free agent/Frederick Mauigoa. Marty needs to focus here along with CB

6 WRs- Moore, Samuel, Anderson, Roberts, Omar Bayless, Zlystra. Very top heavy.

26 Defensive

4 DTs- KK, Brown, Kerr, Roy Like all spots, this group needs to stay healthy here.

6 DEs- Burns, Gross, Weatherly, Obada, Miller, Haynes. Happy to call this a nice group of young talent.

7 LBs- Smith, Shaq, Carter, Kunaszyk, Orr, Whitehead, Reese/waiver claim. ST drives this group

5 CBs- Jackson, Pride, Oliver, free agent, free agent. What a group......

4 Safety- Boston, Burris, Chinn, Robinson. Like DE didnt see this becoming a strength. Its much welcomed

no cares about ST, marty needs to trade either Gano or Slkye for a CB/OLmen.

It's really hard to tell how it would look like so I just did my best. Also, remember that you can have 55 players, but at least 2 of them have to be PS players.

Note: Under the new CBA, teams are permitted to have 48 players active on game day if said team has eight active offensive linemen. If the team has fewer than eight players whose primary position is center, guard or offensive tackle, it can only have 47 game day actives. A team still cannot exceed a 53-man Active/Inactive List unless it is promoting one or two practice-squad players using the "Standard Elevation Addendum," in which case the team can expand its roster to 54 or 55 (only using said practice-squad players).

It looks like we all agree: Davis needs to go, we need to sign at least a starting caliber CB and a backup OL. I know some people are hopping we tank but we need these three transactions and if Teddy will play solid, we will compete.

What I don't understand about the 55 player squad...what's to stop a team from cutting a couple guys, assigning them to PS, then immediately calling them back up, signing 2 more for the PS, all just to say this is their week 1 roster? Or is there a certain time a team can only call up 2 players? And are they even allowed to fill the 2 blank PS spots from the players they called up?

With lots of luck, who knows. CB can be hidden somewhat, I did see where players called DC Snow yoda for all his football knowledge. Still great play callers can get the matchups they want, Sean Payton is the best in the league. ALso heard during all this 19 stuff, that its much easier to coach defensive to rookies than offensive. I still have them as 4-12 team.

Darqueze Dennard and one of Ross Cockrell or Javien Elliott, that alone would go along way for fixing the CBs. OG just needs a Norwell to happen, miller can hold down the RG spot. LG is one of the easier spots to fill most times, Daley could have a Norwell impact. Depth overall depth is a big issue, the team has decent starters. Then the backups are XFL talent, any injuries to starters form WR, OL, RB, DT, CB......(basically the whole team).... and the replacement is a huge fall in talent/skills.

Im not going to judge this team til the start of 2021 season.

In the old CBA if you got called up form PS, you got a 4 week NFL check no matter what. That may have changed, teams where doing certain players dirty. Sign them off another team, that team fills the spot, then you get cut five days later with no where to go. So they at least put some coin into your pockets. You do what youre saying its going to take up cap space too.

There was even a loophole where at times teams could have 54 players on the roster. Pats(surpise) where always doing extreme stuff with drop/add form their practice squad. Remember the panthers legend Tiquan Underwood was cut hours before the superbowl and they added someone form the PS. They had one player for about 8 straight weeks was added on Sunday and cut Monday, last season and before.

Saw rumors that we are interested in signing tramaine Brock. A Vet that Could definitely fill that CB 1# role for this year. He was good for the titans last year.

I know we're stretched thin with our dead money and rookie signings. So I'm not sure if we could afford him, but also could see it happening on a small 1 or 2 year deal.

I actually believe part of our strategy at the moment is, in a way, signing FAs that can contribute enough to insulate our rookies, but also be replaced without any major future financial issues being caused.

This also leaves us thin depth wise to the point that a few injuries will derail the season pretty quickly while also giving Rhule and the new management a nice excuse to ease preassure from the fans and also still maintain those high draft picks we need to rebuild our depth and talent level over the next 2-3 seasons.
