Steve Smith: Panthers most improved after Draft

I agree, with the same slight bias he has to us also. The defense can't get worse than last 2 years. The jury is out on Phil Snow. If he can't field a top 10 defense by year 3 I hope Rhule doesn't have the same issue with faithful to his guys over reason that Rivera did.

In the end, this draft was, at least on paper, exactly what the team needed. Defense was our biggest need, especially along the line and the secondary. Did we get the right guys? I think so, but there are a few I'd never heard of before to be honest.

Are we the most improved in the league? Well, I believe Steve Smith and also I remember how bad we were. I think that mathematically it would have been hard not to improve and still be able to field a team.

He's been very critical of the Panthers in the past so not sure he is biased.

Panthers improve from being out of the Lawrence race to being top contender ha

FWIW, we were out of the lawrence race the day we signed Bridgewater.  He may not be an elite QB, but he's not as bad as what we fielded last year.  If we traded/cut cam and went into next year with Allen, I would have known we were tanking.

The Panthers are tough to gauge honestly. We weren't as bad as our record showed last year. Not only did injuries make us worse than we already where, but after Ron was gone the team just quit.

I wouldn't expect to be markedly better wins and losses wise, but I would bet that our defense is light years better by simply having a pulse.

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
