Carolina Panthers draft grades - McDonald's Breakfast Edition

On paper, the Carolina Panthers could have had one of their more productive drafts in team history. Only the future will tell us how it truly should be graded. Until then, I will now give you the next best thing. 

 

Here are this year's Carolina Panthers draft grades with each pick earning an item on the McDonald's Breakfast Menu. 

 

Derrick Brown - DT

Arguably the worst thing about the 2019 Carolina Panthers was their inability to stop anyone from running all over them. This makes the Brown pick one of the most important they could possibly make over the next several seasons. Brown will be the anchor the entire defense is tied to starting this season. Yes, Simmons was available, but this pick on its own merit is impossible to complain about.

McDonald's Big Breakfast with Hotcakes - Fills up the empty space in the most satisfying way

 

 

 

Yetur Gross-Matos - DE

Gross-Matos will immediately play a key role on the Carolina Panthers defensive line. Everyone is talking about his ability to get to the quarterback, which is true, but I am more excited about what Gross-Matos means in the run game. Ever since the departure of Charles Johnson, the Carolina Panthers have missed having a true 4-3 defensive end to set the edge and contain the runner. Gross-Matos has that ability and will only amplify how improved the Derrick Brown pick improves the Panthers run defense. 

Grade: 

McDonald's Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddle - Delicious, substantive, and does it in style. 

 

 

 

Jeremy Chinn - S

Matt Rhule stated Chinn will be able to cover tight ends for the Panthers. Those exact words were spoken by the Panthers about Rashaan Gaulden. Where Gaulden was a total failure, Chinn could excel. Chinn has the size and athletic ability to cover any tight end in the league as needed. Also, his name is Jeremy and that means he is prett god damned amazing to begin with. 

Grade: 

McDonald's Sausage Egg and Cheese McMuffin - Consistent, dependable, unlikely to disappoint

 

 

 

Troy Pride - CB

Pride is a guy that has flashed pro ability but has not done consistently enough to be considered a top prospect in this draft. Taking him in round 4 isn't much of a risk for the Carolina Panthers. Because of the dire need at corner there is little chance Pride won't make the final roster. The only question is if the Panthers brand spanking new coaching staff can mold him into a solid rotational corner. Pride will be a good litmus test for what we can expect from this Panthers regime in terms of player development. 

Grade: 

McDonald's Sausage Burrito - Good, but not great. Leaves you wanting more. 

 

 

Kenny Robinson - S

In round 5 the Carolina Panthers selected safety Kenny Robinson. At 6'2 and 198lbs Robinson has the ideal size to be a free safety in the NFL. This season, however, Robinson will likely spend most of his time on special teams where he has a chance to prove his worth until he develops into a NFL caliber safety. Robinson is at least two seasons away from seeing much time on defense barring injury to others in front of him. 

Grade: 

McDonald's Fruit and Maple Oatmeal - Not your first choice, not your second choice, but perhaps will make you feel good about the decision later. 

 

 

 

Bravvion Roy - DT

I love this pick. Roy is a mammoth of a man at 6'1 and 332 pounds. Having played for Matt Rhule at Baylor, Roy is already willing to run through a brick wall for his coach. Roy will make the team and see time on defense this season as he spells Derrick Brown. The Panthers were in desperate need of defensive tackles before the draft, now they just need perhaps a serviceable vet. 

Grade: 

McDonald's Bacon Egg and Cheese McGriddle - You orderd a plain sausage biscuit, but in the bag you found something much better. 

 

 

 

Stantley Thomas-Oliver III - CB

Thomas-Oliver made the switch from receiver to corner his sophomore year making him a bit of a project at the NFL level. He will need to come in and really bust his ass on special teams to make the Panthers roster. If not, a practice squad spot is likely where he could also be groomed as a returner. 

Grade:

McDonald's Fruit n Yogurt Parfait - Low expectations to satisfy, but perhaps will contribute to something better later.

Again with the Gaulden-Chinn thing. Kinda forcing something that’s not there. Rhule’s staff May have similar ideas of what to do with them that Ron did with Gaulden but they’re much different players.

Forcing something other than they both are safety/ nickels that the Panthers drafted to cover tight ends.
