DTs who do not generate double digit sacks do not make the Hall of Fame (Brown's ceiling?)

Derrick Brown has a really high floor, but low ceiling.  This was a 'safe' pick, and he won't be a bust, but we should have been a lot more ambitious at the #7 spot.  When I speak about the HOF, I refer to the modern NFL.

Every top 10 pick we've had over the past two decades has been a Hall of Famer.

Sure we had a historically bad run defense, but we're not contending for the Super Bowl next year, or even the year after.  You have to aim for the Hall of Fame talent with a top 10 pick, and not  become overly concerned with need when you're years away from contention.     Don't get me wrong, Derrick Brown will likely be a fantastic pro, but the positional value for a DT who is not an elite pass rusher is just not there to justify a top 10 selection.

If you believe he is a Hall of Famer, try to think of a comparable player in the NFL he matches to.   Brown never had more than 4 sacks in any college season, and I haven't seen any analyst project him to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL.

For reference, here are the past Panthers drafted in the top 10.

Christian McCaffrey

Luke Kuechly

Cam Newton

Jordan Gross

Julius Peppers

Someone better call the wambulance for this one. He was the right pick, just because he wasn’t the one you wanted doesn’t mean the pick is bad.

grow up.

I would first argue that a DT doesn't have to have double digit sack numbers for multiple years to go to the HOF.

The Eagles DT Fletcher Cox only had 1 season over 9 sacks (10.5) and most people would agree that he will go to the HOF when he retires, so I don't think a DT has to have double digit sack totals in multiple years to go to the HOF.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14941/fletcher-cox

McCoy never had more than 9.5 sacks https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/13240/gerald-mccoy

In fact only one DT comes to mind with sacks like that the best to play DT Warren Sapp, but if Derrick Brown can play as good as Cox, McCoy, Suh

I highly doubt anyone would complain about his production & value to the Carolina Panthers.
I'll go ahead and say it right now (as long as he isn't injured) I think Derrick Brown will go down as the best DT to ever play or ever will play in a Panthers outfit (McCoy's one year wasn't as significant as the rest of his career, going only by how they played DT while they were a Panther not with other teams).

Can throw this back in my face if I'm wrong, but I dont think I'll be wrong.  Simply watch the tape on that guy, and add the fact that they drafted an edge rusher & DBs that can press receivers so that the QB can't just dump the ball right away.. man the Offense might stink this year, but it'll be fun watching the Defense play.

Brown doesn't play like Sapp, Cox, McCoy or Suh and he shouldn't be expected to because he doesn't have the elite athleticism like those 4.

Based on his tape, his game is all power and in that he's more like Marcell Dareus, Michael Brockers or Dontari Poe. He'll get some sacks but his value isn't in his pass rush it's opening up the other pass rushers and playmakers.

Have you looked at Panthers top 10 picks in the last 20 years?

Cam Newton might be the only one to not make the HOF, and only due to injury.

I want to make the playoffs. I'm not wallowing in misery 48 hours after we make a pick because he might not make the hall of fame. You sir deserve poo.

Brown is more than just a dominant pass rusher.  He is a leader, on and off the field.  How many times was the team last year just holding up their hands in frustration after getting crushed in the run?  Whether or not he makes the Hall is pretty irrelevant to me because a lot of times that goes to players who put up stats, but not necessarily contribute greatly to team wins.  Let's see what Brown can do before writing him off as a nobody.

I actually wanted us to trade down, since this draft didn't have that many generational players at the top, but was deep in the middle round.  Okudah was the last guy drafted I thought had HOF upside.

From what I read, the Panthers were looking to trade down, but only 1 team was really pushing to trade up.  Falcons wanted CJ Henderson, who Jax picked at 9.  Who they knew Jax was targeting.

Miamie/LAC were locked in on QBs.  That left Cards/Panthers.  And inter-division first round trade just wasnt happening.  Broncos/Raiders had probably wanted to trade up but their WRs were just waiting for them at 12/15.  And 7 woulda been early for either.

That being said I am fine with Brown.  Love him actually.  Love his personality.  (Calling out TMZ writer for referring to a picture of his girlfriend as a "Baby Momma").

I woulda been fine with either.  Both fill glaring needs.  I just hope I can stop hearing about 3-cone drill times at this point.

When picking that high in the draft, you absolutely do need to be aiming for generational talent.

No other way to get back to the Super Bowl unless you think you're going to find generational talent in free agency.

Look at the guys we've picked in the top 10 the past 20 years.

I look at all of the guys picked in the top ten over the last five years. I maybe found 10 hall of famers. Your expectations are pretty far fetched

yeesh, didn't last year demonstrate to us that sacks are not all that matters to a defense?  who is a better pick there?  A linebacker?  talk about a position that doesn't have the same value it once did...

also lol at HOF being the criteria of a successful draft pick.

Y'all call me crazy but Derrick Brown reminds me a lot of the late Reggie White. Similar in size and power in their game.

Reggie White had that outta this world strength, Brown has that too.

Reggie White was explosive off the snap, Derrick Brown is the same.

Hopefully Derrick has the same results in success.

Was this team better with Kris Jenkins? Were the Vikings and Giants better with Linval Joseph? Great defensive lines need a pocket pushing, run defending DT. Rarely do you find someone like Brown who could do both while playing three downs. If KK can stay healthy this line will feast.

    • You go after my guy with nonsense like "I don't see quickness or explosiveness" and "I haven't seen a lot of quickness or full route tree ability that we always ignore" Then yea, I'm gonna punch back. Like I've said, if people want to draft someone else, that's totally fine, everyone has their own opinions.  But if you're going to advocate against a specific player, don't talk complete nonsense about their game like this. Even more so, don't do that when you're saying I'm the one with a bias towards him. If I was afraid of it looking like a bias pick on my part, I'd never have said I was an Arizona alumni when arguing for him, but I've admitted it from the very beginning, because I don't think my Arizona connection gives me a bias, it just means I know his game REALLY well as I've seen every snap of his college career.  So yea, you start saying the knocks on him are things that he's actually really good at, then you're going to get an earful from me with some video evidence to back it up. In the end, for me, it all falls back to how rare a player like T-Mac can be due to his size.  The smaller speedier type of WRs are exactly who you can find in later rounds and who become available as Free Agents, I can't ever get on board with taking a Hunter (as a WR) or Burden over T-Mac if all were on the board, for that reason alone, and I'd say that if he was a freaking Sun Devil, no matter how much it would hurt me to admit if it if that were the case.
