Arkansas State wide receiver Omar Bayless' undrafted deal with Carolina Panthers includes $100,000 portion of his base salary guaranteed

I was just fixing to guarantee that Bayless makes the team!

Dude's hands are unbelievable!

Looks to have YAC ability!

Wins at point of contact!

I didn't see a varied route tree, but that's what development's all about!

Edit: OK, I'm slowing my roll. I read some scouting reports! Kid has potential, but not a lock!

He plays a little soft, & does leave some on the ground! He needs to be seriously polished! And, he's slowish (4.6).

He was clearly a priority FA here. Going to have to do some research.

If you listen to Chinns interview he mentions the Arkansas St. WR as the best receiver he went against last year.  That has to be Bayless. I am betting they took notice of him when scouting Chinn.

Nope! I already scoped that! He mentioned Kirk Merritt!

Bayless looks like a player. His technique seems sloppy as all hell but matters is, dude seems to always come down with it. And he was being held like nobody's business a lot

The 4.6 thing is kind of negligible anyway.

Yeah his release looks very sloppy/inefficient but there's something to work with there. Same with route running. Looks really good with contested catches which is a good thing because that 4.6 does show up. Looks like exactly who to target as an UDFA.

I found my UDFA that I’m rooting for. This guy has to make the team.

The dude catches everything and I am not even worried about his 40 time because his play speed is faster than his underwear time.

This is a sleeper udfa right there, me likey!

Panthers 2020 undrafted free agents  (Bold are my predictions to make the roster)

  • Brandon Bowen, OT, Ohio State
  • Chris Orr, LB,Wisconsin
  • Omar Bayless, WR, Arkansas State
  • Giovanni Ricci, TE, Western Michigan

Practice Squad

  • Mike Horton, G, Auburn
  • Myles Adams, DT, Rice
  • Myles Hartsfield, CB, Ole Miss
  • Rodney Smith, RB, Minnesota
  • Fred Mauigoa, C, Washington State
  • Jordan Mack LB Va

Unlikely to make roster or PS:

  • Sam Franklin, LB, Temple
  • Jason Ferris, LB, Montana Western
  • TreVontae Hights, WR, TCU
  • Cam Sutton, TE, Fresno State

Panthers 2020 draft picks

Round 1, No. 7 overall — Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
Round 2, No. 38 overall — Yetur Gross-Matos, DE, Penn State
Round 2, No. 64 overall — Jeremy Chinn, S, Southern Illinois
Round 4, No. 113 overall — Troy Pride Jr., CB, Notre Dame
Round 5, No. 152 overall — Kenny Robinson Jr., S, West Virginia
Round 6, No. 184 overall — Bravvion Roy, DT, Baylor
Round 7, No. 221 overall — Stantley Thomas-Oliver, CB, FIU

And the WAY TOO EARLY projected lineup:

Defense (24)    Projected Starter in bold

Safety (4)

Jeremy Chinn (round 2), Juston Burris SS

Tre Boston, Kenny Robinson (round 5) FS

Cornerback (5)

Donte Jackson, Corn Elder, (Free agent yet to be signed)

Troy Pride (round 4), Stantley Thomas-Oliver (round 7)

Linebacker (7)

Shaq Thompson, Jermaine Carter, Tahir WhiteheadJordan Kunaszyk , Andre Smith, Christian Miller, Chris Orr (undrafted free agent).

Defensive End (4)

Brian Burns, Yeter Gross-Matos (round 2),  Stephen Weatherly, Effie Obada

Defensive Tackle (4)

Derrick Brown (round 1),  KK Short,  Zack Kerr, Bravvion Roy (round 6).

Offense (26)

Quarterback (3)

Teddy Bridgewater, PJ Walker, Will Grier

Running Back (3)

Christian McCaffrey, Reggie Bonnefon, Jordan Scarlett

Tight End/Blocking Back (3)

Ian Thomas, Seth Devalve, Giovanni Ricci (undrafted Free agent)

Offensive Tackle  (4)

Russell Okung, Taylor Moton, Greg Little, Dennis Daley

Offensive Guard (3)

Chris Reed, John Miller, Brandon Bowen (undrafted free agent)

Center (2)

Matt Paradis, Tyler Larsen

Wide Receiver (7)

DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Curtis Samuel, Seth Roberts, Keith Kirkwood, Pharaoh Cooper, Omar Bayless (undrafted free agent)

I am guessing that Brady’s offense will focus on WR sets matching this situation, justifying 7 (and Daley can serve as a 4th G, while Reed can serve as the 3rd C)

Whew!  If this is accurate, just about half the roster is populated by new faces.

My case for having 4 undrafted free agents on the roster in 2020:

  • Brandon Bowen, OT, Ohio State  Bowen was a starter at a Big 10 school as a sophomore and got injured.  he went through several surgeries, taking him out of 2018 altogether. He bounced back in 2019, got his job (RT) back, and played well.  In another T market, he might have been drafted, but the injury and lack of exposure as a JR hurt him, as did playing 2019 while regaining playing strength.  I project him as a G that can back up RT in a pinch.  I hate to mention Andrew Norwell, so I won't mention Andrew Norwell.
  • Chris Orr, LB,Wisconsin  His size hurt him--he cannot carry 240lbs (frame) like other ILBs, so he was not tall enough to ride that ride. His leadership is mentioned in articles about him, and that matters to Rhule.  And being signed by a team with a statue of Sam Mills outside the stadium was probably not lost on him.  We had Beason, another smallish MLB---could Orr be the next great MLB in Charlotte?  I would not bet against him.  I think we could go with 3 ILBs for now, but eventually, he will have to beat out K or Whitehead.  I think he can.
  • Omar Bayless, WR, Arkansas State  How this guy did not get drafted is unreal---only in a draft that was loaded at WR would this happen.  Bayless gives us a big (6-3) WR who plays fast and gets contested balls.  He needs some WR coaching, but this guy wins a job--I have 7 WRs on my roster, but we will probably go with 6---and Bayless will be in the top 5.
  • Giovanni Ricci, TE, Western Michigan  You should not discount this player before watching his tape.  He is a great blocker from the wing, motion, out wide, and is decent beside the tackle. He could mean bad news for Armah, depending on the offense.  Ricci's hands are good, he runs good routes, and he is very aware of the offense. He is that guy we have never really had here.  I am very high on him and think he will take one of our TEs' jobs---I want to say Manhertz but it could be DeSalve--again, depends on the offense.

I think they did their homework.
