Obviously Pete is the driving force of the draft. But that is because the GM understands that Pete is the one directly working with these players and producing the on field product. 
 

Any good GM picks who the coaching staff wants. None of them say “I’m picking who I want whether he works in your system or not, so deal with it” 

The fee exceptions don’t tend to last very long. A certain Dave Gettleman comes to mind.

So yes. Marty and Rhule have had a great draft. But that is because, as with previous coaches, Marty respects Rhules vision and is not making picks without Rhules adamant stamp of approval 

I can agree with a lot of that, but not quite all of it.

Yes, Marty respects what Matt Rhule wants. He also respected what Ron Rivera and John Fox wanted. That was part of the problem, especially with Rivera because his talent evaluation skills were terrible.

It's cool to respect a coach when the coach knows what he's doing. On the other hand, if he's full of sh-t, it's better to have someone who has enough knowledge of their own and the guts to be willing to tell them so. That's why Gettleman and Rivera were a more successful combination than Rivera and Hurney.

For the record though, Marty does have one draft where the coach's input didn't matter because said coach was on the outs with the team. Marty had full control of the picks for that year and made them with little to no regard to what John Fox wanted or believed.

That was the 2010 draft, the one where we got Jimmy Clausen, Armanti Edwards, Tony Pike and David Gettis . But hey, we did get Brandon LaFell and Greg Hardy out of it (temporarily).

I'm as big a Marty Hurney critic as anybody, but that was not on Marty.

Marty is, in fact, the last person who should take any blame for that event. He'd have extended Newton if he were allowed.

Hey,.. Detroit isn’t the biggest threat,.. maybe. Matthew Stafford has never been the problem for that team and he’s not old. Patricia may have them turn a page finally,..

 Washington—- I think Dwayne Haskins would have to turn into Patrick Mahomes for them to turn away from Lawrence... of course if he did that they wouldn’t be in contention. He could but I think he’s going to continue to suck,..

Jacksonville is a dark horse,.. Minshew is such an wild card and a feel good story. They don’t have a bad team, were just in the playoffs not too long ago.  
 

the Colts? How much longer does PR have?   I think they are a huge threat,..

Tampa Bay may take themselves out of contention by winning too much,.. but they would be perfect to be in the race for Lawrence.... can sit for awhile and wait.

Patricia is still there. They will suck. I’d love to have Stafford. Watch them trade Staff to Bill and tank for Trevor. For the colts, they will be good. Could even win the division if Rivers pans out. If not they still got Jacoby. That defense is going to be pretty damn good, if not great

That would be really smart,..except the Patriots have like $3 million in cap space,.. the trade would have to be without giving MS cap money to them,.. a big reason they haven’t called for Cam and avoid 1st round picks,..
