Comparing the 8th overall pick with the 64th overall pick is hardly fair, but it was leaked that the Panthers were not crazy about Simmon’s lack of physicality.  He makes tackles, but he does not punish the ball carrier.  Chinn has more of a reputation for being physical.

Since it was known that we were considering Blacklock and YGM in the second, can we assume that we would have taken the bigger need, DT, instead of YGM?  I think that might have been the factor that tipped the scales.

So instead of Brown, YGM  we would have been Simmons, Blacklock.

But the addition of Chinn is almost as if we got the best of both worlds---that Swiss army knife (Buffalo nickel, S that hits harder than the ninth overall pick) the best DT in the draft, and the third rated DE.

Chinn LOVES to hit while Simmons... not so much.

Go watch Chinn’s 1v1’s at the senior bowl. He looked very comfortable. Didn’t win all of his reps but Chinn showed he has the skills and athleticism to be able to cover some of the better prospects

The big difference that we saw between the two is the love of hitting and contact.

Jonathan Jones made it sound like we were concerned about Simmons' willingness and desire to hit.

Chinn looks like he is on a mission out there to seek and destroy.

Yeah I'm excited for our young defense to get on the field and grow together. May not be great year 1 but they will steadily become a pretty damn good unit I believe. Still need help with dline depth, and secondary but it's a multi year process

Our draft has been a GREAT step in the right direction. A solid building block

Sometimes you take an Athlete and hope you can mold him. Chinn is the prototype Buffalo Nickel. Needs to work on his coverage skills a bit more but can Blitz and play from the Slot with the speed to cover.

Love the pick the more I think about it. He may be a poor mans Simmons but that's perfectly fine

Wish he coulda had a chance to play with Luke tho.

One of the biggest things is that Clemson didn't really use Simmons as a LB, he was all over the place. Chinn was being used as a DB.

I think that is actually advantage Chinn. Simmons will have bigger learning curve. Chinn will have more problems adjusting to the speed. IMO, anyway

Brown/YGM/Chinn >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Simmons/Blacklock/(fill in the blank with a second-rate CB)

Easily and by far.

I wanted to call him just that, but in this system, he may be a better fit than Simmons would have been.  I watched some video of Simmons and he had some moments--he can cover ground--but where does he fit?  Is he soft?  I even posted back in February--I just am not that impressed with him---what am I not seeing?  Maybe my expectations were too high; maybe I was drinking the Kool Aid.

I am totally happy with the way this turned out.  Silly school girl in a manly way kind of happy.
