Marty was trying to trade back into the first round to get Gross-Matos

So this is interesting from CBS sports.

The early entry ended up going with the sixth pick of the round and 38th selection overall. According to CBS Sports HQ senior NFL reporter Jonathan Jones, the Panthers nearly traded back into Thursday’s first round to get Gross-Matos and were happy that he was still available in the second.

Amazing what can happen when Marty takes his hands off the wheels.  He always thinks we are just one player away.

Here is the video:

I also think this is why they so easily traded up for Chinn. After almost potentially giving away the farm to go get Gross-Matos Thursday they only had to give up a 5th to get Chinn in the 2nd.   I think they felt this was the trifecta they were looking for.

Can someone please hack Marty’s WiFi for the rest of the draft please.

Literally every year there are reports Hurney tried to trade back into the 1st round to get X player (last year Little)

And yet, it never happens, he never does.  I would think if he was trying, he would have found a suitor.

So these stories don't really hold up.

"Marty tried to trade up for Clausen" (and yet it didn't happen)

"Marty tried to trade up for Little" (and yet it didn't happen)

"Marty tried to trade up for Matos" (and yet it didn't happen)

So either those stories are not legitimate, or Marty is clearing not willing to give up anything of substance to make it happen (which shows he's making sound decisions).  Because there are always plenty of teams who would love to trade down, so the fact it never happens is revealing.

He seems to have learned his lesson after the 2000s.

In the video it's Pete Prisco who says that he "thinks" the Panthers were attempting to move back into the 1st for Gross-Matos.

What is more interesting is what Jonathan Jones said, he reports that the pick was between Gross-Matos and Ross Blacklock the DT from TCU.

Makes me think we would still consider a DT on day 3. A guy like James Lynch or Leki Fotu could be the pick in round 4

But everyone was saying Marty looked so upset during our pick cause he wanted Kyle Dugger who was taken right before us? Can y’all at least stick to one narrative?

These huddle GMs don’t know what they’re talking about.

The Panthers absolutely tried to trade back up into the first round to get Little last year and Gross-Matos this year. It wasn't successful because trading up into the first round is difficult as hell. GM's don't really want to give up that cheap 5th year for first round picks.
