Where we stand after the draft

The Chiefs were 33-15 the 3 years before Mahomes started. They were basically one piece (and a little luck) away and Alex Smith wasn’t a bad QB, just not great. They already had a lot of talent like Hill, Kelce and Chris Jones. They just couldn’t win in the playoffs when it mattered.

I can only hope in a few years we are *that* good enough to win a Super Bowl. We were *that* good and lost the Super Bowl.

That said, I’d rather not be stupid and avoid a Lawrence or Fields because we aren’t elite. If you have an elite roster already that’s when a Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson can win you a SB.

citing players who took off post mahomes kind of adds to the point here, but it's irrelevant

The San Francisco niners were better than the chiefs, in some places substantially so, at almost every single position on the field except one.

The chiefs roster, as you pointed out, was good enough to make playoff runs. But there is a difference between playoff good and super bowl champion good. Don't misunderstand because I can gather that you do: I'm not saying the Chiefs had a bad roster or am endorsing having bad football players, to insinuate I am is just an easy way to counter what I am saying: The Chiefs had a good roster-but without an elite QB is was meaningless. With that, they have one and should arguably have another. It's not a scandalous comment regardless of how some Pound The Rock types may want to portray it as so.

We both agree on the elite QB. I want Lawrence way more than limping along with Teddy. That said people have said in here that the Chiefs built around Mahomes and they weren’t. They did feel like they needed to upgrade Smith. That said, they were 10-6, 11-5 and 12-4 with Smith just bad in the playoffs. Mahomes was 12-4 and 12-4.

Also, you aren’t correct about taking off after Mahomes. Kelce was already the best TE in the league with Smith. He had back to back 1000+ seasons with Smith before Mahomes. Hill had 1200 yards with Smith before Mahomes. Hill actually would have had just as good a year in 2017 with Smith as he had that amazing year in 2018, but he had 32 more targets with Mahomes. Chris Jones was not impacted by Mahomes at all. Because of the typical Andy Reid playoff issues until this year (they tried hard to lose), people think that KC was awful and they built their whole team around Mahomes which is funny because Kelce and LT Fisher were drafted before Mahomes was even in college.

So you want us to win a lot of games, draft an elite QB prospect, and not give up anything, to do it

It isnt going to happen. The team is going to have to make big, hard, aggressive decisions. Your entire plan centers around hoping for the best.

Where in my post did I say anything about winning a lot of games ?

as fans that’s all we can do since tepper seems to have more say than your typical sports franchise owner

Yeah but look at how unbelievably thin we are along the DL. Not including our misfit 3-4 EDGE rushers(Burns, Haynes, Miller) our roster has:

DE

Yatur Gross-Matos

Efe Obada(project)

Chris Smith(JAG)

Stephen Weatherly(project/depth)

DT

Zach Kerr(JAG)

Derrick Brown

Kawann Short

Woodrow Hamilton(JAG)

That's a really, really weak unit overall with some high end talent sprinkled in(Short, Brown, YGM).

And yet, last season with all of the big names we had, we set a team record for giving up the most points per game. It was also the worst defense vs the run that the league had seen in years.

Somehow, I think that we will probably improve a little bit. I mean, those big namers really didn't set the bar very high, did they?

Our 2019 defense  ( as we were reminded numerous times on TV )  was giving up 29 points a game.

We no longer have McKoy, Butler, Poe, Addison, Luke, Irvin, Bradberry , and Reid ..  off that awful defense.

We've added 7 rookies.   and I'm sure we will add some free agents.   Can we really expect to be better on defense in 2020 ??  no.  Maybe 2021 or 2022 .. but rookies aren't going to be magic ..

5-11  record and we won't get  us in the Clemson  quarterback ( Trevor Lawrence ) grab.   We'd need to lose more,  like 14 games.

We got worse on the DL, worse at LB and are substantially worse at CB/S. We are bringing talent in but they are going to take a beating. We are better at WR, the same at QB, worse at TE and worse at the OL as far as starters and depth. We will see if we upgraded at coaching which I think we have as far as scheming, but worse as far as experience. This has 2-14 written all over it. And with the first selection of the 2021 draft, the Carolina Panthets select Trevor Lawrence. Three years of tough times lead us to playing for titles.

Same at QB and worse at OL? WTF.  Say all the bad stuff you want about Bridgewater he is better than Kyle Allen and then go change you LT every other week and see if that is better or worse than what we have on the OL this year.  When you go into a year without a plan at LT, like we did last year and hopping a 2nd round rookie can man the spot is not a solid plan.  That was our plan last year and it didn't work.  I would say we are better at QB, OL and WR.  DL hard to say.  If Short is healthy maybe better, maybe the same.  I have no idea if that will lead to more wins but I know I am not going to poo on this team just because we didn't take the player I wanted in the draft.

I don't think you have to worry about that.

One thing some people are not thinking about....

with CHECKDOWN Teddy, CMC will lead the league in catches. I will not be surprised if he gets close to 150 catches. This will be the year that CMC gets used up, if he plays the same percent of plays as last year we will completely use up our greatest weapon.

i know 150 will not lead the league but you know my point

Well a lot of the guys we will be playing as reserves couldn't get PT over the turnstiles that were there last season. Kind of a scary thought, IMO.

Can't argue with that, but... hey, at least it looks like they are trying to build the defense.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
