Panthers traded up to select Southern Illinois S Jeremy Chinn with the No. 64 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Panthers could have drafted Isaiah Simmons at 7th overall but find a similar player 57 picks later. Chinn (6’3/221) was a four-year starter at FCS Southern Illinois who earned an NFL Combine invite after a second-team AP All-American senior season. In Indianapolis, he showcased 98th percentile Adjusted SPARQ athleticism with elite speed (4.45 forty) and explosion (41-inch vertical, 138-inch broad). A slot corner turned safety, Chinn was a powerful hitter against the run and as a blitzer, but he will be exposed one-on-one at the next level if his eyes continue to be glued to the quarterback. Chinn’s floor is a high-level special teamer and depth option in the secondary, but he could be a valuable defender against tight ends and running backs if his coverage skills take a leap with NFL coaching.
