All reports have teams calling us .. So we have the asset we're not desperate to give him up .. So we have the leverage.. Why are we getting less in that scenario??

Reporters are an information tool used by NFL franchises every single day.

Reporters just report what they're being told. Teams control that narrative through what they tell them. We're trying to create a market.

Regardless of who instigated the trade rumors, if the Panthers can't get any better value than a 5th or 6th rounder (likely comp pick value via FA) then there is zero chance they make a deal.  Why ship out a productive guy if you are not going gain an edge in the deal?  At that point you are moving him just for the sake of getting him off the roster, which makes no sense at all.

The only rational scenario where this is plausible is when there is a player on the current draft board that is available with a higher grade and you use it a to go get said player.  
 

That scenario doesn’t play out at 4:00 pm on Friday in between draft rounds unless we are actively shopping Samuel for said purpose.  This would mean we are calling and not the opposite as is being reported.
