Derrick Brown is the type of core guy Matt Rhule wants to build his defense around on and off the field and and up-front disruptor the Panthers need. I hope we see him used creatively - as more than a space-eater (as important as it is), while that will also be a HUGE role.

As much as you guys want to blame Hurney for picking Brown over Simmons, blame Gettlemen. His drafting of Vernon Butler didn't work out and left a hole, drafting Kelvin Benjamin didn't work out so draft DJ Moore. Every failed early pick leaves a hole and influences next years draft picks.

I don't understand how people are upset about the pick.  I get liking Simmons, or hoping for Okuda, I was in that camp, but this is a very solid pick. 

Easily the safest pick in the top 10 and when rebuilding that isn't a bad thing.  

Would be very interested to know what, if any, trade down offers we got.

Most other coaches can find a space eater later in the draft, instead of 7th overall. Unfortunately he's going to learn the hard way you can't win the NFL without a QB.

Derrick Brown is the worst first round pick since Dave Gettleman's blunders. A space eater that has one pass rushing move, strength, and nothing else. A historically bad combine showing limited athleticism, and tape showing nothing more than strength, motor, but also poor balance and little agility.

I expect much of the rest of the draft to go similarly, reaches to fill holes, "safe" picks.

Brown is this years "next Aaron Donald", except he isn't athletic. These guys are busting at an insanely high rate lately. If you don't believe me go through the last 10 years and look at first round DTS, their bust rate, and even on hits how long they're productive in the league.

 

You probably hated the Star pick too? Which was probably the biggest steal in Panthers history. 

Neither are flashy.  But that is how you win football games.
