Oh man I’ve been accepted this after we signed bridgewater and started stacking up dead money. If they have the dt graded the highest on the board I can live with it but without seeing fa next year or the draft class for next just feels like hand cuffing us for future transactions.

what if next year we are in position to take a dt coming out graded as high as brown or suh, or Donald? We’d be out of luck since we’d have two young guys on the roster, unless we want to do the whole 3 dt rotational things again, I will say the position less talk by Rhule would help but who knows if snow buys into that

Keep in mind, I'm working under the assumption that this is almost certainly Short's last season in Carolina. The DL is always going to rotate heavily. We haven't had a DL play more than 73% of our snaps since 2014. Most seasons, the leader has been in the 60s.  Our #3 DT is generally in the mid-30s in terms of percentage of snaps.

Yeah I’m for sure certain this is shorts last year, but dt is more plug and play than the other positions we need, like cb, c or de which take a couple seasons to get up to speed.

looking at it it probably won’t matter too much if we double dip we are boned either way you slice it.

How did that plug and play approach work last year?

For every one player you list that hasn’t recover there Are equal or more that have gone on to play exceptional well after injury, no it’s not ideal to have an injury at 31 but it’s his first one and not a lower leg injury like Williams or paradis suffered.

Drafting his replacement this year instead of waiting to see the draft class next year or fa would be asinine, we did that with Vernon and he didn’t see significant playing time until his final year, double dipping in any draft really isn’t a great idea unless there’s a monumental slip of a player otherwise you handicap yourself on options.

I'm not advocating giving up a 3rd next year for hurts, just whatever our 4th and 5th will get us maybe next years 5th also. Has better upside than what we currently have

If Blalock is BPA we’d be asinine to avoid him just to give Short another $13M for no reason. Butler was one pick, people just can’t get over it. Taking Star and Short in 2013 was a good decision even though we still had Dwan Edwards who was the starter in 2012.

We wont be competitive next year, we should take BPA and if it gets us Short’s replacement and we can save $13M in the process, let’s do it.

Saying Hurts has better upside than what we have isn’t saying much. We’ve got three QBs who’ve thrown a max of 14 TDs in a year and two QBs who are at best QB3s on most teams. Hurts doesn’t have anywhere close to Cam’s upside. He’s not going to be a great QB so why bother making our backup QB better. Our 4th and two 5ths gets us a late 3rd. We need all those picks to try and find future starters like Gs or LBs or Ss. Continuing to throw 3rds away on backup level QBs won’t solve our need to replace Cam.
