Do you take Tua if he is there? Okudah over Simmons?

Ehh it depends on his medical checks. There’s a legit possibility Tua is out of the league before his rookie contract is up because his hip doesn’t hold up.

the extreme unlikeliness of this only complements the real point here:

who cares? Which player are you so sweet on that it isn't worth the gamble?

the solid but unremarkable DT? The linebacker? Maybe it's the CB who won't get a second contract here when the team inevitably refuses to give him the 90 million he'd command come contract time?

The panthers can manage without those things

None of that is in the same galaxy as the chance at obtaining an elite franchise QB

It’s not worth the gamble at 7, there are plenty of other opportunities to get a franchise QB.

If Tua didn't have his injury history I think he's an easy choice at 7. That being said, that injury history concerns me for a team that really needs to win with it's pick at #7. This is a situation that defines the Franchise, and you don't need to hit a home run as much as you don't need to lose.

Better than anyone else

You don't have to win a Superbowl to be a successful NFL QB.

Also they're just as good as Purdue, who has 3 Superbowl winning QBs as well, one of which was actually in this century.

oh right sorry, I forgot QBs were disposable and easy to obtain

Every pick is a gamble. The draft doesn't center around taking the Safest Prospect Available. The panthers will be fine without whatever Can't Miss defensive player you're so hung up on

They won't be fine without an elite franchise QB

You trust your doctors and if you believe he will be healthy you take him.

He is an elite prospect that would go first overall most years if it wasn't for the injury concerns.

QBs play by different rules in the draft, the reward is so high you are willing to assume more risk, but ultimately you have to trust your medical people.

Enlighten me, what are all these “plenty of other opportunities to get a franchise QB” you’re speaking of?

Look at our depth chart on D and tell me we won’t be the favorite for Lawrence next year...

And there’s a reason many teams have Tua off their board entirely. Love and Herbert have a solid chance to be better in the NFL than Tua.

I do like Tua, a lot. But all of his injury history is a real concern, not just the hip. I wouldn’t lose sleep over passing on him at 7 if that happened, it’s not like we’re passing on a sure thing franchise QB. We’d be passing on a maybe, and there are a lot of other similar maybes out there we can go after, this year, next year and the year after.

I would be extremely excited to get Tua at 7 and would trust the staff if they’re comfortable with his medical to take him there. But if we were to pass on him there I’ll trust them as well.

decrying the idea of "gambling" and then saying the team should bank on getting the 1st overall pick in the next draft especially given that in this hypothetical we'd have a bird in the hand seems inconsistent.

For me, if Brown is off the board, I am taking Okudah.  Especially when the OP adds that Tua is going to the Chargers at #6.

I think we have needs at almost every position, but the cupboard is more bare at some than at others.

We signed TB to take the immediacy off the need for a QB.  People bash TB, but we have not yet seen him in this offense, and what little we have seen of him is not bad.  But, what was the point of signing him if you are going to address QB ahead of the other needs, given there is talent in this draft in a lot of positions?

I'd take Okudah over Simmons, for a similar reason.  We could be hurting at LB, but we don't know that for sure.  Right now, one of us could walk into camp and claim to be a CB and not get laughed at......until we started running drills.

I'd take Brown in a heartbeat, since that cupboard is pretty bare, too, but the OP has him gone by the time we draft.

As for Tua, I like him as a QB and think he has a good chance of a long NFL career.  The nature of the injury does worry me, and given the number of needs we have, I don't think we can roll the dice.  If we needed help in a couple of positions it might be worth a shot, but there are maybe only a couple of positions at which we don't need real help.  By necessity, we have to bank onw hat is almost a sure thing.  To me, those are Brown, Okudah, and Simmons, in that order (alphabetically, anyway).

Pretty much my feelings on the matter.

It's not that Tua failing hurts you at QB, it's that it also leaves a gaping wound still at DT and CB that you could have addressed with 2 very good prospects.

If we didn't have TB I think taking Tua becomes a more possible scenario, but not if you have the 1 of the 3 guys we should have to pick from at LB, CB, and DT first.
