Mike Florio believes Panthers replace Marty Hurney after the draft

So, Tepper is putting more trust for a draft where we’re picking 7th overall and high in other rounds, and that can shape this franchise for years to come, in Hurney, a guy  who won’t be here in a year, than the HC  he just handpicked and backed up the brinks truck for? If that’s the case, this owner might have zero damn clue what he’s doing... And don’t play the “he’s a billionaire” card, we see plenty of completely inept pro sports team owners... I’m completely willing to be patient and look at the big picture but in no way does it make sense for Hurney to have more input in this draft than Rhule.

I never claimed it made sense.

Tepper would have already exited Hurndog if he didn't value his input and consider him capable.

Hurndog has no autonomy, he is not functioning as a General Manager akin to what John Lynch or Brandon Beane or Bill Belichik do on a daily basis.  The GM title is something Tepper has chosen to leave in place out of convenience.

Decisions are being made collectively --- Hurndog has a seat at the table and his functions are to gather information and present it, along with an opinion --- but he has no authority to make solo decisions on anything that matters.

Florio is actually a pretty well educated guy but he has no training or experience that qualifies him to analyze businesses or human behavior within them.

Fun fact, Florio completed his undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University...

...the same school to which David Tepper has donated over $125 million and where the Graduate Business School (among other things) is named for him!

Not good news for us fans though... but like I said I’ll be patient and give Tepper, Rhule and even Hurney a shot to prove me wrong.

If Marty is replace, I really wished they would have done it prior to the draft.  Also, speculation is he will be reassigned from the GM duties, not terminated.

Would have been a huge mistake to replace Hurney before the draft with anybody not already on the team.  Replacing a GM has be more along the schedule of the scouting. After the draft. Not before.

The problem is, like it or not, Hurney has been actively scouting on our behalf for quite a while.  It would be very difficult to replace him in this situation.  Let him have his last draft and if you want him gone do it at that point.

Hurney should have one job and one job only this week. That is to select the 1st round pick. After that, Rhule should be given the full job to take over the rest of the picks. And then, Tepper needs to hire the GM.

I know it's highly unrealistic, but I did say wish  not should have.  Secondly, Marty's scouting is the problem.  If not, then he must be high or drunk on draft day.  You can't be this all-world scout, then flub up so badly on draft day.

As much as I think Hurney is the fifth wheel in this equation and needs to be replaced, there is no way the team would do that prior to the draft unless they had somebody under him ready to step up.  They don't.

There would have been a lot of risk in canning Hurney before the draft, handing the draft to Rhule and company, and hiring a new GM somewhere between Hurney's dismissal and after the draft.  None the least of which is once you go down that path, who works for who and have you then created an inevitable power struggle?

My own preference is for Hurney to retire, sent packing, or made the Assistant Associate Undersecretary of the Department of Excess Redundancy Department, all that in no particular order.  But sending him packing prior to now without a successor already in the loop long enough to have a strong handle on the draft would have been a kneejerk reaction by Tepper.....not something I think he is prone to doing.
