Mike Florio believes Panthers replace Marty Hurney after the draft

I think they are keeping him here BECAUSE of the draft.  The trades,  etc. need a veteran?

Recently, Rhule said the ultimate decision is Marty Hurney's.  I have trouble believing that.

Remember the "Behind the Mask," when they were eating at the combine?  They wanted Marty to make a toast--he passed.  In the booth, Rhule was not communicating with Marty---hard to get a lot from that, but it seemed odd.

Yeah, I know. I could be wrong, but with him still calling the shots on draft day, it probably won't be the best results.

You would have started with an entire new scouting department at the end of the season, which would be very hard to do, along with a new coaching staff etc. Most of the work had already been completed throughout the season scouting college players with the staff on hand, so it makes sense to let them play out the remainder of the contract until the draft, then replace Hurney and let the new GM pick his scouting staff.

Exactly. Once the draft is over you can start fresh with a clean slate but the GM and scouting department has worked hard all year leading up to the draft. You let them complete the process then start over

that's true but why does no other team do this? the only time i haven't seen a GM fired either halfway through a season or immediately after is Carolina twice. Gettleman and in this case Hurney. Hurney isn't going anywhere.

I don’t. But Rhule definitely isn’t in total control of the draft.

Maybe not “total control” but I’d bet he has more pull than Hurney, especially if Hurney ain’t gonna be here in a year and ideally Rhule is here for a decade plus...

Plenty of teams wait until after the draft to make a GM change. It even states it in the original article posted:

Hurney has to date remained in place, but it’s entirely possible that Tepper intends to wait until after the draft (as plenty of teams now do) to make a change.”

And you would lose that bet.

So, Tepper is putting more trust for a draft where we’re picking 7th overall and high in other rounds, and that can shape this franchise for years to come, in Hurney, a guy  who won’t be here in a year, than the HC  he just handpicked and backed up the brinks truck for? If that’s the case, this owner might have zero damn clue what he’s doing... And don’t play the “he’s a billionaire” card, we see plenty of completely inept pro sports team owners... I’m completely willing to be patient and look at the big picture but in no way does it make sense for Hurney to have more input in this draft than Rhule.

If Marty is replace, I really wished they would have done it prior to the draft.  Also, speculation is he will be reassigned from the GM duties, not terminated.

This is the safe bet. They'll strip him of most of the responsibilities but still keep him on the payroll with a Vice President of Player Personnel title or some such.
