Austin Ekeler's extension was for four years, 24 million, and he had 1000 receiving yards

Silly to compare 3 years when Ekeler was an undrafted guy who never got an opportunity to play until last year.

Last year, when Ekeler actually got his chance, he outperformed CMC as a wide receiver.

Ekeler was on the scene before last year, and stop splitting hairs! CMC outperformed Ekeler, and there is a reason for that!

This is one of the more ridiculous threads I've ever seen on the Huddle. Congrats, that's a helluva achievement.

Isn't this the same guy who had us guaranteed to hire Kevin Stefanski because he went to an Ivy League school?

Heck, I think he also might have had us extending Newton based on some convoluted logic.

I'd say he has a history.

Ekeler is a fine player but no defense has ever had to gameplan for the guy. He didn’t “split carries” with Gordon, he was the clear backup and change of pace and receiving back (last year was slightly different with Gordon holding out for a while but they didn’t even trust Ekeler enough to give him the job over Jackson—who he split with). Change of pace backs always have extremely productive numbers, and they very very rarely maintain those if given a larger opportunity. We’ve seen it time and time again. McC plays nearly 100% of the downs and is an elite runner, receiver and pass protector and is the guy on the field that defenses key in on every single play. The field isn’t opened up for him, he opens it up for others. Ekeler has the field opened up for him.

I was about to write the exact same thing. Teams don’t game plan for Ekeler, they do for CMC. And he still puts up 30 touches for 150 yards.

Quite possibly the worst thread in the history of the Huddle and I've been on this site for 14 years.

This rivals the PanthersUnited threads which was clearly a legit mentally retarded 11 year old or a troll.

You don't watch Chargers games and neither do 95% of the fans here.  CMC is the flashier name, had a famous father and had the glorified college career, so people have a cognitive bias when comparing the two.

All analytics guys liked Ekeler above CMC last year.

It's absurd we'd pay CMC 10 million more a year than Ekeler, but Hurney is going to Hurney.

I mean I agree we overpaid CMC, but this is just dumb.

While this thread is very dumb, you also have to talk about what teams these players were playing on, what scheme they were playing in, and what QB they had behind center.

Let's start with the QB.  While Rivers is clearly diminishing, he is FAR better than anything that we had under center last season, especially at the short passing game.

Now the pieces around them.  CMC has a good, but very young and inexperienced WR, a decent WR, and an old broken down TE that he shared the field with.  Eckler was out there with Hunter Henry, Mike Williams, and Keenan Allen....all of them are better than anything that we fielded last year.  Any RB coming out of the backfield could have a heyday catching passes what that group on the field.  Eckler was the 4th most talented pass catcher on his team....CMC is the best.

Scheme.  We didn't have one.  We had a QB who couldn't deliver the ball to his WR's, and CMC...that's about it.
