Austin Ekeler's extension was for four years, 24 million, and he had 1000 receiving yards

Ekeler is a fine player but no defense has ever had to gameplan for the guy. He didn’t “split carries” with Gordon, he was the clear backup and change of pace and receiving back (last year was slightly different with Gordon holding out for a while but they didn’t even trust Ekeler enough to give him the job over Jackson—who he split with). Change of pace backs always have extremely productive numbers, and they very very rarely maintain those if given a larger opportunity. We’ve seen it time and time again. McC plays nearly 100% of the downs and is an elite runner, receiver and pass protector and is the guy on the field that defenses key in on every single play. The field isn’t opened up for him, he opens it up for others. Ekeler has the field opened up for him.

By any metric, Ekeler is a better receiving back, he had a better catch percentage, yards per target, drop rate, and better YAC, a better passer rating when targeted and more yards per play.

Now let's see him do the same while also being the bell cow RB and rushing for nearly 1400 yards.

This is an idiotic premise. It's baffling to me how you can't see that.

Austin Ekeler in his first 3 years: 1371 rushing yards (4.8 YPC), 1676 receiving yards, 22 total TDs

Christian McCaffrey in 2019: 1387 rushing yards (4.8 YPC), 1005 receiving yards, 19 total TDs

And you really made a thread asking why McCaffrey got paid a lot more?

Really?

Paying for past production?

That always works out...

There's been a lot talked about how CMC is also a wide receiver, and that running back salaries should not be applicable to him.

Austin Ekeler had 993 receiving yards last year, on a lot less targets, and playing much less snaps than CMC.  By any metric, he was a more productive and more efficient wide receiver out of the RB position

As for comparing them for strictly running, Ekeler had to split carries with Gordon, but had an identical PFF rating as a rusher per attempt.

So what is the rationale for why CMC should be paid so much more than Ekeler's new modest contract?

The same argument about how CMC can be a slot receiver when he gets older should be applicable to Ekeler.

Neither is going to be a slot receiver. Stop it. When you line them up solely as a receiver, then you draw a corner. There is no mismatch. They are so effective because they can move in and out of various formations and force the defense cover them with a linebacker.

As far as the comparison, Ekeler is a great third down receiving back but he does almost all of his damage on catches. He has yet to show that he can be the ground threat that CMC is or that a featured back is expected to be.

I guess we missed our opportunity to make a player for player trade.  We’ll just have to live with this albatross hanging on our neck for the next 6 years.  What a shame having to deal with such a horrible example to set the new clubhouse culture.  Who on the team would want to follow this guy  into battle as the new face of the franchise.
