Hypothetical: Panthers Trade Back

Many Huddlers believe we should trade back to anywhere between 12 and 15 and select Kinlaw.   Bill Barnwell even updated his trade scenarios, having the Panthers trade with San Fransico for 1-13 and 1-31. So, I was thinking, Kinlaw cant be the only player available at 13. I looked at some mocks and saw that players like Wirfs, Thomas, Kinlaw, Chaisson, and CJ Henderson are generally there at that point.

So what say you?  Who do we pick at 13 if the Panthers made this trade.  Bonus: who do we pick at 31?

I guess you could even throw Jordan Love into this mix.  I would be intrigued by K'Lavon Chaisson personally, but I think the pick would be top OT at that point.

at 31 could see Noah Igbinoghene being the pick, then in round 2 going DT

I actually thought about it this morning and I would only want to trade down if Simmons or Brown aren't there. If we do trade down and grab another first or second I'd think we would go top DT and top CB with the first two picks. Hell, maybe even a Patrick Queen or Kenneth Murray depending on the picks.

Yeah, OT or CJ Henderson.  The #2 CB on many BBs after Okuudah and that way we can still focus on DL, specifically DT, in the second round.  Still sets us  up to take another BPA at #31.  This is where we can take a WR that many folks are chirping about.  The value for WR at the end of round one is really high.

Give me Kinlaw plus a defensive player. Ideally would be someone like Chaisson or AJ Epenesa because I want to transform the line. If not them then I go to LB. Give me Queen or Murray. If not them give me a safety like Delpit or McKinney. I think I would go in those orders as well.

My initial reaction to this thread was "dude just sit at 7 and draft a starter" but the more I thought of it the more I changed my mind.

This draft is probably the one time we have a massive advantage. A majority of our staff is from college this year and we know more about these players than anyone.

I would be very interested to see our big board, I wonder how different it is (beyond the top 10) than other teams boards. Trading back might give us a big advantage, similar to Pete Carroll his first few years...

Yeah, personally I would rather sit at 7.  This is a what if type thing

Kinlaw is good, but Let's say it is rated like grades in school--

  • Kinlaw DT   A
  • Thomas  OT A-
  • Wirfs OT A
  • Chaisson DE A-
  • Henderson CB A-

On the surface, it seems easy; you take Wirfs or Kinlaw

Now look at the Pick at and after #31:

  • Gallimore DT  B
  • Blacklock DT B
  • Elliot DT  B-
  • Madubuike DT    B-
  • Austin Jackson OT     B
  • Cleveland  OT     B-
  • Diggs  CB   B+
  • Gladney CB     B+
  • Terrell CB     B
  • Johnson CB     B
  • Igbinoghene CB     B
  • Arnette CB    B

Needs:  As much as we do not like to say it, we MUST address needs in this draft to some degree.  As I see it, we must find a CB good enough to keep Jackson on the #2 CB or even the nickle/dime CB.  Fortunately, you have a solid second round to find that player.  I think we have to go CB in the second round if you do not in the first; the second round is where you find the best value at CB.

So if you eliminate Henderson at #13, that leaves DE, OT, and DT.  On paper, the biggest need is DT, but we have 2 starters there now (KK, Kerr).  KK's could be waived in 2021 however, if his slide continues.  I would take Wirfs if I firmly believed we did not have our LT in Greg Little. Even so, moving Moton to LG and putting Wirfs at RT is an option.  That is too speculative for the first rounder, so here is what I would do, based on what I know:

My draft would look something akin to this if I felt confident about Little:

  • 13.  Kinlaw DT (if confident about Little) Wirfs OT (if I felt Little is a bust)
  • 31. Josh Jones or Austin Jackson OT (if I felt Little would develop, I still need a T in the event Moton walks----if I felt Little is a bust and drafted Wirfs, I might take Ruiz, C here--building the OL from weak to impressive before round 2.--that will make many mad, but the next three rounds address the D effectively)
  • Round 2:  Trevon Diggs or Jeff Gladney  or Jaylon Johnson   CB (CB is our biggest need)
  • Round 3:  Greenard DE or Curtis Weaver DE (I like them both if we have drafted a DT--if not, Elliot or Lynch DT here)
  • Round 4:  I probably trade up by offering both fifth rounders and my fourth to move back into round 3 and take Greeland DE or Weaver DE.  (I think a pass rushing DE is a need we are not discussing.  We have Burns, but he is unproven and we need a rotational DE.)

I would not mind the trade back even to 13 but I think all 4 of the OT's will be gone by them.
