CMC extension was a great move

“Team has a losing record in 2016 with Cam Newton as focal point.”

it’s a team game man, he’s our best player right now and we won’t be competing for a couple years.  I’m a huge fan of hard working players making their money and he’s earned this.  He’s a good locker room guy and a fantastic player.

It is a team game. There's a reason teams try not to overpay running backs and it's because it often hamstrings the team.

This deal makes more sense if we felt we are contending, but it is a huge risk for a team that doesn't look to be competitive until the back end of his contract.

Call it a dumb comparison all you want but he still had OVER a thousand more yards and 13 more touchdowns than Jones did last season. My point was that his contract is not killing this team compared to the production we will be getting from him.

Just cause he gets production doesn’t mean it’s actually helping the team. Just like Julio these past couple of seasons Mccaffrey got a ton and I mean a ton of garbage time yards.

And we don’t know what the future holds at the RB position

Well thanks for the personal attacks in the main forum, I’m sure your opinion isn’t jaded at all.

Secondly, it’s clear these are Hurney moves. I’m sure Rhule is getting the “learning experience” from Hurney and Hurney is selling that to Tepper hard. Had the new coach been a seasoned NFL coach ya. I’d agree with you. But no matter how ambitious and capable rhule is there is and will be a learning curve. Rhule has never coached NFL much less in a lead position. Dealing with players and contracts is far out of his realm currently, probably for the next few years.

Obviously Rhule has say on who to keep and get rid of but past that you have to to remember he’s still a rookie himself.

Clear how? You're creating scenarios out of whole cloth as if you're trying to guess the ending of Westworld or some tv show. None of us are privy to any of their meetings, and we make our assumptions based on whatever sportswriters' assumptions we agree with. At this point you guys are just writing angry fan fiction.

Tepper already hired a new cap expert away from the Steelers. None of them need to lean on Hurney for anything. If Hurney somehow gets himself extended, THEN you can ascribe to him this Machiavellian genius that you all seem to believe he possesses. Fat chance.

Just stop... every team in the league wishes they could have CMC on the team. It’s a joke that you honestly think in your head that 2300 yards and 19 TDS “doesn’t mean it’s actually helping the team.”

I like the contract and it will bear fruit for us. The guy was simply the best player on the team last year and still is.

Feed him well, feed him often and get as many good RB years out of him as we can. And if the wear and tear starts kicking in, the guy can transition to WR like no one else.

As a team leader, his work ethic alone will pay dividends as the team transitions to a new mindset.

This has literally never happened in the history of the league but now you guys keep saying its an option.  Yeah, no

Also, remember, the cap is going to take a significant jump in a couple of years.  So, by the time his big numbers take effect, they won't look so big anymore.

You will also have new contracts for other backs like Cook, Kamara, and Mixon that will have almost certainly pushed CMC's deal even higher...even if we waited just one year to re-sign him.

This was a good deal, don't overthink it.

Another way to gauge how good the contract is  "Are we paying him based on past or future performances?".  While CMC had a great year, I think he will be even more effective in Joe Brady's offense than he was with Norv or Scott Turner.  I don't mean so in terms of yardage, but I think he will be more efficient, score more touchdowns, and more importantly, will open up more things for other offensive players. I think he will have less carries but more impact.

At first glance, I about spit out my coffee when I saw the contract details. But it kind of makes sense given a few points:

He’s only 23. Most bad RB contract are bad because they pay a 26 year old for 5 years, who of course starts to decline by the end of the contract. I can’t say CMC will decline or not by 28 but I wouldn’t bet against him.

He was our entire offense on a bad team. I’m excited to see how the new coaching staff can utilize him with an improved WR group.

And lastly, they need to sell tickets. This offseason has gutted the team of all name recognition for most fans. Cam, Luke, Olsen, all gone. 3 of the best players in franchise history gone in an offseason. They need a player to get fans in the seats and CMC is that player.

We think that, we don't know that.  Marty bet on this one time in the past, and the cap didn't move...burned us.

With the economy short circuiting, fans not wanting to gather in large groups, Disney and all of the stations losing money like crazy during this, and not really knowing when the country will get back to being able to spend $200+ on a football game.....that cap may not jump like most imagine.
