CMC extension was a great move

Im fine with the contract, even the number. If it was next year or two year down the road.

The two biggest things that stand out to me are timing, there is no way CMC would have held out this year. All i can surmise is his camp spread that as a rumor with some trade strings attached to scare Hurney and Hurney fell for it. I mean it’s quite possible in my mind his camp was just straight up floating the demand of a trade.

Secondly, this is just another marker to show Hurney hasn’t changed one bit. Always overpaying the fug out of running backs.

You haven't changed either. You're still convinced that Hurney is calling the shots; why? What on Earth makes any of you believe a guy on the final year of his contract, that hasn't been renewed, holds sway over a head coach who's in the first year of a seven year contract? Because you don't like Tepper? Because Tepper blew some sunshine up Hurney's ass in a press video? Jesus. The lack of critical thinking in here is unsurprising, but depressing nonetheless.

Nobody is saying that.  What we are saying is that the way the CBA was set up it favored the Panthers.  This was completely unnecessary.  The rookie deal was accepted by the players union so tough poo for Cmac.  we should have leaned into the advantage of having him on a rookie deal and build the team around that.  Not prematurely making him the freaking highest paid running back ever 2-3 years before it was needed.

Dude he is literally only making a little under 13 mil a year. That's a damn steal how do u even question that deal. I can't agree with u on ur logic.

There is only one Christian McCaffrey! That should be obvious based upon his time in the NFL. Based upon his sheer production alone, he is a generational player. That being said, I'm not mad at the contract (and I'm not going to trash Hurney, or compliment him backhandedly for doing the will of the leadership of the team)!

Of course, you're taking a risk when you sign a legit superstar & game changer to a lucrative deal, but that's the nature of the beast and always has been. Serious injuries are the only thing that can really upset this deal, but that's always the case. But, CMC has even spoken to his durability with his play.

Basically, you pay the young man like his amazing productivity, versatility and durability demands or you don't, and someone was going to pay! We decided that it would be us! It's that simple!

So, stop the whining! We got a market deal! It doesn't get any better than CMC, so let's all pray for his continued health and success!

If no season,  then he will be under contract till 2026.  It's the same amount of wear and tear

No chance of this. No way agents and NFLPA will let all the players on rookie contracts have to wait another year for their big deals. I don’t know about getting paid actual money but there’s no way they’d let players on rookie deals get one year older and play their fifth year on a cheaper deal.

Yea but the way the contracts are written, they have to.  Why would the clubs give that up? We dont have a season and players on their last year just become free agents without playing out their contract? Owners would never allow it

same posters complaining that "sure he was so great and we still only won 5 games," "running backs don't win super bowls" are literally the same people espousing the glories of He Can Do Some Nice Things Quarterback play and the glories of taking some pointless CANT MISS peripheral player in the draft

I think I feel off the fence into liking the deal. Averaging out his next 6 years would mean $12-13m per year. Waiting until after contracts came for Kamara, Barkley, and Cook would have only increased the price to keep him at the end of his rookie deal. It's a gamble as all long-term contracts are, but it's worth it if we are competitive in the next two years and have him still locked in at his prime. I hope it works out for us.

Dumb comparison

A WR receiving yards have more impact than a RB receiving yards. Mccaffrey best game receiving last season all ended in loses, why? cause teams are willing to let trailing teams dink and dunk all day long.

btw I’m not against paying him as long if we’re not tanking or giving him a long term contract

Call it a dumb comparison all you want but he still had OVER a thousand more yards and 13 more touchdowns than Jones did last season. My point was that his contract is not killing this team compared to the production we will be getting from him.

First of all Hurney isn't managing the cap anymore. We have a capologist to do the numbers. Secondly this wasn't about stringing this out paying him as little as we can. This doesn't impact the cap this year and his cap hit in 2021 will likely be small given the first year of a multi-year contract is usually small so honestly there won't be a significant hit until 2022 when we are projected to have tons of cap room.  Unless he get seriously injured or falls apart this was a smart signing and will pay big dividends.  That 16 million number is a deal based on his production.

I was a bit torn on whether or not we should extend him. (Not torn on the player)

On the one hand, he's young, he's dedicated and competitive - I don't think the money will dampen his efforts at all. He's the type of guy you want in your clubhouse. And he's dynamic and productive as hell.

On the other hand, paying a RB big money is not something I generally support, regardless of his pass-catching abilities.

I do love that we're keeping CMC around because he's so easy to root for and so fun to watch. And the contract is reasonable in the grand scheme of things.

I hope he stays healthy and continues to entertain us throughout his new deal and can be a cornerstone of a championship season. The ceremony is over. We're married.

Well thanks for the personal attacks in the main forum, I’m sure your opinion isn’t jaded at all.

Secondly, it’s clear these are Hurney moves. I’m sure Rhule is getting the “learning experience” from Hurney and Hurney is selling that to Tepper hard. Had the new coach been a seasoned NFL coach ya. I’d agree with you. But no matter how ambitious and capable rhule is there is and will be a learning curve. Rhule has never coached NFL much less in a lead position. Dealing with players and contracts is far out of his realm currently, probably for the next few years.

Obviously Rhule has say on who to keep and get rid of but past that you have to to remember he’s still a rookie himself.

I'm not mad at the contract. Actually it seems cheap considering we have a band aid of a QB, ( i mean...hes not our franchise QB) and whatever new young QB will come in the next year or 2 will need someone like CMC to make things easy in the beginning of their career.

With Cam out, Luke retired, TD and mid life crisis moving on....CMC is the only player we have to excite fans to buy tix for next season. I feel like the loss of those guys and the team needing SOMEONE to get excited about and hopeful for next season for were a huge factor in this contract.
