CMC extension was a great move

What is the average pay for a 1000 yard receiver? 8 million??? What about a 1000 yard back?  8 million? So should one guy who can do both and only take up one roster spot be worth 16??? His worth is his durability and  versatility so you get 2 starters with one roster spot.

Panthers Wisely Reward Christian MCcaffrey, The New Face Of The Franchise:

With Cam Newton gone and Luke Kuechly retired, Christian McCaffrey has become the face of the Panthers. He’s also now the wallet.

McCaffrey’s record-setting contract, given to him after only three NFL seasons, represents one of the smartest moves that the Panthers have made under new owner David Tepper. McCaffrey would not have shown up for anything without a new deal, and the Panthers have avoided that complication in coach Matt Rhule’s first season by paying him.

McCaffrey likely wouldn’t have participated in the virtual offseason program, but per a source with knowledge of the situation it never got to the point where McCaffrey had to make a decision. The Panthers stepped up and got the deal done, before it ever became acrimonious.

It was smart for the Panthers to do it; McCaffrey’s agent, Joel Segal, engineered the eventual Khalil Mack trade after months of ugliness in Oakland and, more recently Segal quietly got DeForest Buckner a trade from San Francisco to Indianapolis. The Panthers avoided anything like that by getting the deal done.

The question now becomes whether they’ll regret it. There’s no specific reason to believe that they will as it relates to McCaffrey’s abilities, but most major second contracts given to tailbacks in recent years have been followed by the players having less-than-stellar performances.

For McCaffrey, it won’t be easy to maintain his current level. He became in 2019 only the third player to generate 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. But, still, if they’re going to pay quarterback Teddy Bridgewater $21 million per year over the next three to play quarterback, McCaffrey at $17 million is in comparison a bargain, even if he doesn’t generate back-to-back 1,000/1,000 years.

Let’s be real, it’s pretty obvious two people upset:

 1. He’s white

2. Cam was let go and cmc wasn’t traded (aka butthurt)

No one else mad the top player at his position was signed and is on the Panthers.

The Panther have LONG overpaid players at their position. Players that weren’t the best. CMC is the best and he’s paid what is expected in order to keep him here, no BS.

Out of all the bullshit contracts the Panthers do, this isn’t one of them. 4 year contract to a 24 year old preforming the best in the nfl at his position, and the Panthers spent the draft capital which makes him more valuable...it makes sense.

What stupid comment, do better

Seems like a good deal to me. I still think one of CMC's best skills is avoiding injury. He knows when and how to avoid big hits. With all the times he has touched the ball in his first 3 years, I honestly can't remember him taking one big hit.

And by the time his contract ends (Age 27/28), that is usually the time RBs start to significantly regress. So if he is showing that regression, that will be the right time for the contract to end.

Here's how I look at it:

In 2015, we had Stew making 8.3 and Meangelo making 6.3.  So 14.6 for those two.  As good as they were, they didn't produce what CMC has and will.  And the cap was lower then.  We can live with vet minimum or rookie contract backups at RB since CMC never comes out anyway.

This is actually a pretty good deal.

Need to see a lot better from him before we give him a big money deal

I’ve seen enough. He is our best, most consistent linemen, and he will only get better. Dude is only 26 this season and can easily perform at a high level on a new 4 year deal until 31. He’s not going to get CMC beat at position pay, but he has earned a nice extension. Moton needs to be the tackle we build around and fingers crossed, little develops well this year and takes over LT next year as a starter on 2 more rookie years pay.

That's probably underselling it. Robby Anderson got $10 million for 750 yards and most people thought that was a bargain. For 1000 yards? Amari Cooper had just under 1200 yards and got $20 million per year. For a 23 year old whose production has exponentially improved yearly hitting 1000 receiving yards? I wouldn't be surprised if that merited $16 million alone, completely ignoring the rushing aspect.

Yes we are paying him in the years he should get paid. 16m at age 30 makes less sense.
