CMC extension was a great move

Gotta admit, I found the idea of Hurney doing a McCaffrey extension pretty scary.

And while I'm not a big fan of handing anybody the biggest contract in history (or even in the NFL), this extension isn't making me scream.

I agree I was nervous as well with Hurney. The contract ended up not so scary though, and if we didn’t pay him that, someone else absolutely would have. He’s a game changer, and no way his camp would have allowed him to play next season on a rookie 4th year wage.

This....anyone who thinks other teams wouldn't have paid him this much if not more are out of their minds.  He earned every single penny he got last season and more.  He was our entire offense and without him we would have had one of the worst teams in the NFL of all time.

Best offensive weapon in the league last season at age 23...and it wasn’t even close:

Not only that. 3rd ALL TIME in scrimmage yard last season, only behind HOF Faulk and Chris Johnson's phenomenal season..  On an offense that every single person on defense knew McCaffrey was going to get the ball 80% of the time.  Tell me again how that man didn't win offensive player of the year in the very least?

Gee maybe our horrific 5-11 record had something to do with it

our record does not discount McCaffrey's incredible performance over the course of the season.  Its an individual award, not a team award.  It's like saying Barry Sanders doesn't deserve to be in the hall of fame because his team sucked the entire time he played with them.  Gee.....you're wrong.

Jourdan Rodrigue of the Athletic:

The Panthers didn’t just extend a running back

The Athletic reported after the NFL combine this spring that the Panthers were bracing for McCaffrey’s camp to play heavily toward his versatility in negotiations — and understandably so.

McCaffrey finished the last two years as the team’s starting running back, and its No. 1 receiver by target number — in 2019 he recorded a historic 1,000 rushing/1,000 receiving yards season and was named a double All-Pro by the Associated Press at running back and flex.

There is a growing movement among NFL decision-makers and analytics personnel that moves away from high-dollar contracts for running backs, who are thought to depreciate in value like a new car off the lot. And true, the Panthers could have made the argument that, even with McCaffrey’s historic numbers last season, the Panthers only won five games.

As word spread in league circles that McCaffrey’s camp was looking to re-set the running back market with this deal, some thought the Panthers might even try to trade McCaffrey away for capital, as they — assumed — set about completely tearing down and rebuilding the roster. There was also some internal debate within the organization about whether the Panthers needed to undergo a complete roster teardown — including a possible parting of ways with McCaffrey — or whether they could possibly win sooner, with a few core pieces secured in place.

Once the team was able to sign quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and then receiver Robby Anderson, the notion of a complete “rebuild” became more far-fetched than that of a “reboot on the fly”. The side within the Panthers’ ranks that believed the team would be ready to win sooner than perhaps previously expected — while all the while not completely selling the farm — won out over the “burn it all down” proponents.

And, at least publicly, the Panthers appeared ready to meet McCaffrey’s camp where they were: At his historic versatility, which would demand top money.

“To label him a tailback, that’s not respectful to him. He’s a tailback-slash-wideout. He can do it all — returner,” Rhule said last week (McCaffrey probably won’t be a return man, as an aside).

“So I’m anxious to get him out there, I’m anxious to continue to build this thing around him. I think he’s going to be a special player for us.”

This deal, which actually runs through 2025, shows the Panthers’ current long-term commitment to McCaffrey (though as we have seen as recently as last month, the NFL can be a fickle world at times).

McCaffrey will be a free agent for the first time in his career at age 29.

Let’s be real, it’s pretty obvious two people upset:

 1. He’s white

2. Cam was let go and cmc wasn’t traded (aka butthurt)

No one else mad the top player at his position was signed and is on the Panthers.

The Panther have LONG overpaid players at their position. Players that weren’t the best. CMC is the best and he’s paid what is expected in order to keep him here, no BS.

Out of all the bullshit contracts the Panthers do, this isn’t one of them. 4 year contract to a 24 year old preforming the best in the nfl at his position, and the Panthers spent the draft capital which makes him more valuable...it makes sense.

I just seen that and commented on it, bunch of weirdos.

Rhule wants versatile players--CMC is that.  So is Samuel--expect to see both in dual roles some.  He will want to take Simmons if he is there.  SS/LB/nickel--he does it all. If the pick is Brown, he plays Nose --- 5t.  Teams will not be able to defend the Panthers.  We have weapons outside (moore, anderson samuel, etc etc.) If we get a good OL (we are closer than you think) the offense should be set.

Defensively, think Shaq and Simmons at LB and a stud CB as the core.  OK at S, fair at #2 CB (jackson), and fair at DE and DT.

Get the offense clicking and then load up on D for 2 years.

2021 will be a good year.

Unless he ain't there, we takin Simmons
