CMC extension was a great move

i agreed until i read the last part... this team isn't even touching the playoffs next year.

Sure we can.  Did you just start watching the NFL or something?  Turnarounds dont take 5 years.  Team can restock, retool and be ready to go very quickly.  We're already a lot better off than some around here think.  The offense should light teams up next year.  Defense is a work in progress.  Im not expecting a great season this year, but next year we go into it with a TON of cap space and the Rhule regime firmly in control.  I may be in the minority, but I am excited for the future of this team.

What the hell?

Christian McCaffrey is the most talented white player in NFL history. Being the most talented white player in NFL history makes him a great player. Great players deserve contract extensions because they make your team better. That's not hard to understand.

If you cannot stop using the race card don't post anything.

Yeah but we are all still trying to figure out why being white has anything to do with being a great player or getting a contract extension? lol please stop doubling down on digging your hole

Just stop... every team in the league wishes they could have CMC on the team. It’s a joke that you honestly think in your head that 2300 yards and 19 TDS “doesn’t mean it’s actually helping the team.”

No kidding. We would have had the worst offense in the league by a long shot without CMC. Until the Grier experiment we were around the 12th scoring offense. We lost last year because our defense was awful, worst in the league after week 1. We went 1-7 to finish 2018 mainly due to the defense as well. Cam’s shoulder was actually #2 on the reasons we lost. Also, the fact that CMC had the season he did with our awful OL is amazing.

Unfortunately, Marty actually thinks we can be competitive so we are wasting comp picks and cap instead of just going full rebuild with 4 comp picks and top picks this year and next. Save $88M on cap space this year and next on Teddy, Short and Anderson and save that with all the picks and sign real solid players in 2022 or 2023 (like KC with Clark, Matthieu and Watkins) going all in on Lawrence, CMC, Moore, Burns, Okudah/Brown/Simmons, Shaq, pick 38 this year and 33 next, etc.

Let’s be real, it’s pretty obvious two people upset:

 1. He’s white

2. Cam was let go and cmc wasn’t traded (aka butthurt)

No one else mad the top player at his position was signed and is on the Panthers.

The Panther have LONG overpaid players at their position. Players that weren’t the best. CMC is the best and he’s paid what is expected in order to keep him here, no BS.

Out of all the bullshit contracts the Panthers do, this isn’t one of them. 4 year contract to a 24 year old preforming the best in the nfl at his position, and the Panthers spent the draft capital which makes him more valuable...it makes sense.

Jfc could this racist, backwater of a website get more awful.

Of course most teams would like to have CMC on their team BUT at what cost?

Rookie deal? Of course.

This extension? Not every team, nope.

We are sitting near or at very top when it comes to dead money and we’re basically throwing away this year to try and get out from under it.

If you’ve been paying any attention to the direction of this league in terms of running backs and are still on cloud nine about this extension... yikes

ehh, the best RBs still get paid.  https://overthecap.com/position/running-back/ ... and if you look at when those contracts were inked this isn't really as huge a leap as it currently is being made to sound because of how the salary cap is projected to shift.

now it is 100% true not every team would have been able to pay CMC - or have wanted to.  But plenty of teams have made huge investments in RBs, not all of it having been wasted IMO.

Oh come on!  Yes, the world is turned upside down right now, but it will get back to normalcy at some point.  This year may be a wash, but the wheel will spin again, and people will be willing to spend for their entertainment again.  TV deals will get done, fans will show back up to games, and players will get paid.  Some things might change, but nothing that will significantly effect entertainment (which is the category professional sports falls into) long term.

Sure, many of the big companies are hemorrhaging money right now, but once things open back up, people will come out in droves after being cooped up so long, and much of those losses will be mitigated.  And what they can't make up, will be absorbed and passed on to the consumer...us.  But the consumers will still consume anyway.  There will be football, and everything will return to normal...albeit probably a bit more expensive, but people will still pay.

While I would love to have your optimism, I'm not sure that every CEO of every entertainment company shares the same zeal.

Maybe this doesn't affect the global economy as much as you think it will, but I don't think for a second that this is just a blip on the radar.

From 09-14, 6 NFL seasons, the cap increased a total of $10M, again, not saying that's what's going to happen, but we have absolutely no idea what the TV and Pro Sports worlds are going to look like after this.

for reference for everyone

Year Maximum team salary
2019 $188.2 million
2018 $177.2 million[15]
2017 $167.00 million
2016 $155.27 million[16]
2015 $143.28 million[17]
2014 $133 million[18]
2013 $123 million[19]
2012 $120.6 million[20]
2011 $120 million[20]
2010 Uncapped
2009 $123 million

from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salary_cap#National_Football_League

edit: it is worth noting that the recession was not the only thing going on then.  the owners opted out of the CBA in 2008.  This directly lead to the uncapped year in 2010.  I am actually not sure how the current CBA is tied to league revenue, but that matters a lot.

it is worth noting that *all* of the increase from 2009 to 2014 came from 2013 -> 2014, too.

I agree that they still get paid but how many of those teams would like a do over?

I posted the highest cap hits for RB’s last season somewhere else but here it is again...

Lots of regret on that list.

I’m curious to see what the Saints, Vikes and Titans do with their RB situations upcoming.

I think the Vikes will pay Cook. The Saints will trade Kamara and the Titans will probably let Henry walk after they pound him into the ground this year

I don't think this is a blip at all.  But I've been watching and listening to the experts, and every one of them says we will come out of this.  Doesn't mean it will be easy or like flipping a light switch and suddenly the pandemic will be gone and the economy will be like it used to be.  But it will happen eventually.

And, the entertainment industry will survive, and in a lot of cases, even thrive...albeit after some recovery.  This is a down year, and it may even last into the first half of next year.  But eventually, things will start to re-open and people will begin going to movies, restaurants, concerts and even sporting events again.  And once leagues start playing again, people will show up (when allowed) and others will be glued to their tv's watching.  The decision makers at the networks as well as in the NFL know this as well.  So they will make a new TV deal soon (one of the reasons the NFL was in such a hurry to complete the CBA was so they could get started on negotiating new TV contracts).

And it was negotiated into the CBA that the players will get a much higher percentage of this than they ever have , which will significantly increase the salary cap.  I believe it will be 2021 or 2022 when most insiders say there will be huge jump in the salary cap.  I can't remember the exact year, but they all say it is coming.  I have no doubt that unless he gets injured (which is the caveat for every big ticket signing, regardless of position), this will be seen as a good deal for the team.
