CMC signs extension

I like it. Locks him up for the entirety of his prime and no more. He should stay productive for the entire thing barring any major injuries. CMC has demonstrated super human durability so assuming he will break down in 2 years is unfounded. It's also not completely resetting the market. It's the token minimum to be just above Elliot whom he dwarfed in production last year.

Also, let's stop pretending CMC should be judged based on other running backs alone. Realize that his contract's average annual value is the same as Sammy Watkins from 2 years ago and you could easily argue CMC is a better RECEIVER than him, let alone an elite rb in the same package. If you want to argue Watkins is more of a downfield threat and thus considered more valuable, how about Jarvis Landry who is a similar receiver/YAC guy (but less elusive imo) making almost the same amount per year (particularly when you account for inflation from 2 years ago).

Whether you like it or not, he's the face of the franchise and the team is solidfying him being here for the foreseeable future without mortgaging our immediate or long-term future. I call that a win.

If you don't pay that dude your an idiot. This was inevitable and saying any amount we pay him is stupid is short sighted on your part. CMC was the best player on the roster with Luke and Cam Healthy. This is a new Era of panthers and CMC is the horse. Surround him with talent, build a great defense and you got a shot.

The money had to be spent on him, plain and simple he produces to much for anything less than what he got paid. And honestly a 4 year contract seems very reasonable bc at the 6 year mark Running backs tend to slow down. And right now while McCaffrey can do it all, you pay him like he can.

Plain and Simple. Any alternative to that opinion just can't be pleased what so ever. I think this was our best move yet as it was the expected one, and also one that was the most necessary.

I don’t look at CMC as a Chris Johnson or Todd Gurley. CMC is more like Marshall Faulk or Curtis Martin. The Panthers have obviously gone in on offense this year, and the new defensive guys from the draft will take some time (couple years probably) to get to a point to be a really good defense. While a little high in dollar value, I think this is the right time for a deal like this to provide some excitement during this transition period.

If you look at it like spending $8 million a year on a 1000 yard RB and $8 million a year on a 1000 yard WR, it's not bad. Hopefully the contract is front loaded and not a Hurney screwball contract. We did hire an expert so hope and all.

Could we also actually use another RB occasionally? It's not like CMC can't be moved a round strategically while someone else takes a few hits.

I meant it more in the way of keeping the Panthers relevant.

Winning makes us relevant, not having one good player on a losing team. He'll just be a stat you see scrolling across the bottom line updates rather than a guy getting headlines. That is what happens to great players on poo teams, unfortunately.

This is a 4 year extension.  He will play the next two years under his rookie deal .  The advantage for him is that he get upfront money and guarantees, the advantage for the Panthers is that future salaries will go up with a new TV contract.

Great point. Once the new tv money kicks in, $16 million per year will be like $9-10 million in today's money.

I figure he is about to go off in this new offense so they wanted to lock him in now before his price goes even higher if we had waited another year.

I like that optimism. There's a good note in one of today's PFF articles about how Joe Brady set up his running backs in the passing game at LSU: https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-study-in-social-distancing-how-lsu-isolated-jamarr-chase-in-unique-environment

It'll be great to see CMC working with that kind of space.
