I think some of the fan base is still bitter about Cam Newton’s exit so it is hard for them to be positive about anything right now

yeah he's right no one ever thought that giving a running back the highest annual salary for the position in league history (with what appears to be massive guaranteed money) was a misallocation of resources in today's nfl. it's all because the hedge fund guy ran off cam newton.

hey antwan im sure you lurk here. do you think this is the tweet that's gonna get you hired by the team?

As much as I like the signing, Hurney got fleeced again. We had two years to deal with this.

Yeah, the only issue I have with this is the timing. You don't want to re-sign someone after a historic season unless you absolutely have to. We didn't unless CMC and his camp were pushing the issue and threatening to hold out behind the scenes which honestly is entirely possible.

I don’t believe CMC would do that this year, no matter what his camp was pushing. Next year ya for sure. What’s the most believable in my mind is his camp started whispering about wanting to be traded and Hurney fell for it.

Im not for this either, but theres no way he would have reported to Camp without a deal. So if you wanted him, you have to pay him, blame Zeke he did this AND got paid.

value of the franchise tag for running backs this year was $12.5 million and it wouldn't reach his AAV next year so yeah, franchise tag would save money vs the extension. you could argue that they're hedging against him being declared a WR for the purpose of the tag but even then the price difference doesn't forgive the longterm financial commitment. it's a dumb contract.

Actually, I misspoke, it doesn’t include the 5th year option so including his last year of his rookie deal It will be about $12.5M a year for 2020 through 2025. It’s not a dumb contract even if you don’t like it. I haven’t seen the guaranteed amount but the last year will definitely not be guaranteed so if they want to lose him after 2024 (he turns 28 right before that season), then they’d be paying him a shade under $10M per year for the next 5. That’s really doable considering that hopefully we’ll be on to a rookie QB contract and higher cap values.

A lot of saltiness in here. If we want to win with a rookie QB like we almost did with Cam, you have to pay the weapons (DJ will be next year). Look at KC, last year they had cap hit s for Hill $18M, Watkins $16M and Kelce $11M (a bargain). Our only weapons are CMC and Moore and at about $10M a year for the next 5, CMC is more like Kelce than Watkins.

So here is a different take on this.  Cam was asking for an extension.  Let’s assume it was for over 30mil per year.  (Not sure of the amount).
But for the same amount of a top tier QB we have Bridgewater and CMC.

Only time will tell what the right move was.  But I think it’s an interesting play.

He would have reported this year. Next year, no.

About a 0% chance, a few insiders reported he would hold out. Again Zeke just did this WITH one year AND 5th year option still there. Once the Cowboys signed him, it changes the league business.

I just think re-signing him right now wasn't smart. He's still under contract and you never want to get stuck paying a guy coming off of a historic season.

Marty is Marty.  He has a long history or overpaying RBs.
