CMC signs extension

Tepper made it clear with before the last 3 games that we were going to do whatever it took to get CMC to 1k/1k.  Our red zone offense droped from 58% to 44% to 33% and we went from scoring 21.5 points per game to 24 then 3 then 10.  Cant win scoring 10 and 3 points.

He averaged 23.6 touches over the last three games. Over our five wins he averaged 30.2. The highest number of touches he had last season was 37. We beat the Texans 16-10 that day.

Just now, Mr. Scot said:

Well, if we're talking about coaching, it's probably worth considering that Christian McCaffrey running plays designed by Joe Brady is probably a different player than Christian McCaffrey running plays designed by Norv / Scott Turner.

True, it will be interesting to see. I expect a lot less rushing and similar passes to the RB if you look at 2018 and 2019 LSU.

Pretty much never.  But, when has he had talent around him?  He's amazing, but a lot of his stats have come on bad teams when frankly he was ALL we had.

Not totally against the deal and IMO it HAD to be done, but once you factor in the rise of DJ, if Samuel can live up to the hype, add in Robby, another TE/WR in the draft, and flat out just regression to the mean...he's not going to be the 1,000/1,000 guy anymore.  Unless, like last year, he's racking up a lot of empty stats as one of 2 options as we get our ass beat and don't have a QB who could do anything.  If he is capable of keeping up the 1,000/1,000 type stuff, we just locked up the greatest player in league history so who cares.  Imagining him to continue being the CMC we've seen is a little crazy to me and all I meant by the post.  Does he have another MVP caliber year in him in the next two years?  Sure.  Can he withstand that for the next 5?  History says hell no. Again, he's a Top 3 RB in the league and we had to pay him, but people justifying the contract solely based on his production are playing fantasy football and not thinking about building a team. I love CMC, I'm fine with the contract for now..but "just a RB?" - - if this team is going to actually win games, CMC's role is going to reduce greatly because it means we've actually got legit WRs (plural), a TE again, and a QB we actually trust to throw the ball instead of check down to CMC and let him work.

It’s reasonable to assume that winning would require production from several offensive (and defensive) components. It’s also reasonable to assume that if they can find production elsewhere it won’t eradicate the notion that defenses will consider CMC a primary responsibility while simultaneously increasing his longevity if in fact he’s not being asked to carry the entire offense on his shoulders.

The contract wouldn’t make sense for a guy like J Stew who is injury plagued and a fairly one dimensional RB. CMC is a generational talent and he deserves that green. Glad we don’t have to watch him suit up elsewhere for quite some time.

Here's the thing-- this kicks in after rookie deal. Which means we got him at top money a year early. Which means next big time RB will get paid a post-CMC number, but we'll already have CMC in the bag through 2025. It won't be so bad when we're looking at FA in two years when it kicks in.

That and he is our legacy player now for Cam, Luke, and Greg. And he might turn out to be the greatest dual threat player of all time. So....

He was also targeted more in those last 3 games

I could make a GREAT case both ways about this. Personally Id rather put cap space in other areas.

Can we please all agree this past 1k/1k season was forced? Once it was over, fired Ron and NO playoffs. The entire focus of the offenses was getting CMC that 1k/1k season for whatever reasons. A 16 million player better get those 1 yard game-winners too, unlike this past season.

I understand, just dont agree. Im a DL whore and would sign Freeman or Miller to a 3million deal. Use that 13 million on a stud lineman.

Well, I mean he was catching 86% of his targets over those games vs. 81% over the course of the season.

But, if you're asking me if I think we were trying to win those games? Honestly I would hope not. It would've been dumb to try to win those games.

Gotta believe Fewell wanted to win.

Would certainly have been in Scott Turner's best interests as well.

    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
