For players of low positional value, you only want to give the truly elite guys big money deals. Average starters at QB, LT, DE are worth lots of money, while you can find average starters at ILB, RB, OG for not that much money.

Luke Kuechly was also a player at a low value position, but because he was the best in the league he was worth every penny of the big contract. CMC is in the same boat. As long as we use him well (no more of this running him up the middle 20 times per game) and spell him with a power guy from time to time, he has the skillset to last a long time in the league. I certainly think he will stay an elite RB for the next 4 years, which will only take him through age 27-28.

It's really through 2025-2026 season, so he'll be 25 before this contract hits in 2021-2022 after his last two years of his rookie deal is over.

The positive thing is that we have lots of cap space. Let's hope we don't eat it up in the next few years and then look at his contract at a burden. As many have stated, perhaps this is heavily front loaded.

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention but the Panthers have changed a lot of things other than paying a top shelf running back, including their entire coaching staff. It may not happen instantly, but saying they shouldn’t try and sign good, young pieces they drafted because they suck now, well I’m not sure how logical that is. You don’t draft and sign an entire winning team all at once.

The results are yet to be determined. The offense looks good outside a huge question mark at QB and a lot of questions along the OL. We will see if that translates to wins on the field.

That’s my mindset with it.  It’s not like he’s just a great player on shitty team (which we currently are).  He’s one of the best players in the NFL and is still super young. He’s never missed a game and is absolutely electric.  I love the deal, personally.

He was force fed the ball to get to 1k/1k and the team was horrible while doing so.  RB can never be considered one of the best players in the league

When has he ever been “just a RB?”

Pretty much never.  But, when has he had talent around him?  He's amazing, but a lot of his stats have come on bad teams when frankly he was ALL we had.

Not totally against the deal and IMO it HAD to be done, but once you factor in the rise of DJ, if Samuel can live up to the hype, add in Robby, another TE/WR in the draft, and flat out just regression to the mean...he's not going to be the 1,000/1,000 guy anymore.  Unless, like last year, he's racking up a lot of empty stats as one of 2 options as we get our ass beat and don't have a QB who could do anything.  If he is capable of keeping up the 1,000/1,000 type stuff, we just locked up the greatest player in league history so who cares.  Imagining him to continue being the CMC we've seen is a little crazy to me and all I meant by the post.  Does he have another MVP caliber year in him in the next two years?  Sure.  Can he withstand that for the next 5?  History says hell no. Again, he's a Top 3 RB in the league and we had to pay him, but people justifying the contract solely based on his production are playing fantasy football and not thinking about building a team. I love CMC, I'm fine with the contract for now..but "just a RB?" - - if this team is going to actually win games, CMC's role is going to reduce greatly because it means we've actually got legit WRs (plural), a TE again, and a QB we actually trust to throw the ball instead of check down to CMC and let him work.

Sigh, it didnt have to be done.  We pumped up his stats and then paid him for it.  It makes no sense.  Let him play 2020 out with the new regime and then see what you have

For the guys that approve of this, when was the last time a contract like this worked out for a team?  In the past month Gurley was cut and the cardinals had to move on from David johnson.

Are you joking?

Gurley was damaged goods coming into the NFL.

The Cardinals "had to move on" from Johnson because they were offered f**king DeAndre Hopkins in return.

OK, so he'll be around 29. At worst, the magical RB cliff hits during the last year of this deal. Most of the RBs that have fallen off early have been the Peterson/Gurley type of downhill power backs - those guys wear out more quickly. Tomlinson is CMC's best stylistic comp IMO (maybe Faulk). Faulk's best years were ages 26-28, but he remained a productive back until 31. Tomlinson's peak similarly lasted until age 28, but he was still a good player (though more beat up) until age 30.

I'm not worried.

Really want to see the numbers and structure of the deal.  Teams and agents always calculate the value of the new money when bragging about contracts. But, that's bogus, players rarely see the last years of a contract, or all the bonuses/incentives.

How much is guaranteed? How is it structured?  This may be a 3 year 45 mil in reality, which combined with the last year remaining on his rookie deal, would be a 4 year, 48 mil deal, which is still 12 mil a year.

Elliott got 50 mil guaranteed, but only 28 mil fully guaranteed. The panthers could give CM 30 mil fully guaranteed and CMC, or his agent, would claim he got more guaranteed money.
