CMC signs extension

The offense could be quite a bit better this season than last, which will help CMC.  But it is a give an take, using him as a decoy will help the rest of the offense.  Teddy will be upgrade at QB since Cam was hurt and Allen stumbled.  Left Tackle will be better.  Receiver corps will be better.  Offensive coaching has the potential to be a lot better.

Some things CMC does that others do not, is avoid the hard hits.  He is very twitchy and turns and twists at the last minute to minimize the crashing hits.  It will help him.  That said, I don't like paying big dollars for RB's, even though this one is somewhat of a hybrid.  $13.6 over 5 seasons will probably do it for his career.

LT got very close, his team just choked when it mattered because chargers. that team was consistently contending tho. and again, CMC isn't just a RB. the only player in that list on CMCs level in terms of receiving ability is faulk, the one who has a ring and went to another super bowl as well.

You do realize that LT had a 100 reception season, right?

that season was an outlier, the rest of his career he had 50-60 recs outside of the 400 yard season beforehand.

Yeah, I guess it is just an odd move overall to pay a RB so much money during a time period where he is going to likely be on some very bad teams. Hopefully this pays off in 4-6 years.

I’m hoping the only reason they paid him that much is because they know we’re going to suck. I’d pray Hurney has learned his lesson about overpaying rbs when you’re team is actually competitive.

Playoff teams this past year

Bills (Josh Allen)
9ers (Jimmy G)
Titans (Ryan Tannehill)
Vikings (Kirk Cousins)
Pats (Tom Brady)
Eagles (Carson Wentz)
Seahawks (Russell Wilson)
Ravens (Lamar Jackson)
Saints (Brees)
Packers (Rodgers)
Houston (Watson)
KC (Mahomes)

How many of those would you consider "elite" and how many are good QBs with a solid supporting cast? I see 5, MAYBE 6 that you might be able to successfully argue are in the "elite" category. This doesn't mention the Dak Prescott's of the league. Is he elite? Is he good enough to win if you put pieces around him? Matt Ryan elite? Also, how many "elite" QBs made it to their conference championship? Those two games were Rodgers v Jimmy G and Tannehill v Mahomes...exactly 2 elite QBs. Super Bowl had 1. Hell, a Patriots team got beat by Tannehill in the wildcard.

Point being, you can win in this league if you surround a good QB with talent. You don't need some upper tier QB to win in the playoffs. You need a good team with good players in all three phases of the game.

I mean, you can try and justify it any way you want to. It doesn't change the fact that paying running backs hasn't generated many positive results(on field or in terms of overall success) in recent years, the running backs CMC is "most" like didn't lead their teams to much Super Bowl success, and that RB has generally been devalued as a position in the last 10-15 years in the NFL.

For all of CMC's successes so far, it has been for one winning team, the season he started the fewest games and had the least production.

The point of saying all this isn't to disparage CMC. He is an amazing player. He just happens to be an amazing player at a position that has been dramatically devalued in the current NFL. We can't even count many career examples of him putting the team on his back and carrying us to victories. In fact his average total yardage  in losses has been far higher than in victories for us.

In Wins: 99.9 Total YPG AVG(62.3 Rushing, 37.6 Receiving)

In Losses: 125.8 Total YPG AVG(59.5 Rushing, 66.3 Receiving)

I am not sure how much better data you need to prove my point.

Take a good look at the Super Bowl winning QB's for the last 20 years.

Good move IMO. A lot of people won't agree due to positional value but CMC is a special player. Think about it: in a losing season and sketchy play on  on offense, he had a Pro Bowl season and was a defensive nightmare. He's still young and he hasn't hit his prime yet. And with the increase in cap space next year and not having to pay franchise money for a QB for at least the next four years, it made a whole lot of sense to do this deal now.

That’s my mindset with it.  It’s not like he’s just a great player on shitty team (which we currently are).  He’s one of the best players in the NFL and is still super young. He’s never missed a game and is absolutely electric.  I love the deal, personally.

For players of low positional value, you only want to give the truly elite guys big money deals. Average starters at QB, LT, DE are worth lots of money, while you can find average starters at ILB, RB, OG for not that much money.

Luke Kuechly was also a player at a low value position, but because he was the best in the league he was worth every penny of the big contract. CMC is in the same boat. As long as we use him well (no more of this running him up the middle 20 times per game) and spell him with a power guy from time to time, he has the skillset to last a long time in the league. I certainly think he will stay an elite RB for the next 4 years, which will only take him through age 27-28.

You mean the backbone of the 16th best Total YPG offense, the 14th best Rushing Offense and the 19th best Scoring Offense?

That is kind of what some of us are saying. Having a top shelf running back alone isn't going to solve our offensive issues.

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention but the Panthers have changed a lot of things other than paying a top shelf running back, including their entire coaching staff. It may not happen instantly, but saying they shouldn’t try and sign good, young pieces they drafted because they suck now, well I’m not sure how logical that is. You don’t draft and sign an entire winning team all at once.
