What we think we know about the first 7 picks

We had good LBs last season how much did that help the D? Stoping the run is key, give me Brown

Panthers will be in Nik D most the time we only need 2 starting LBs and 1 to come in from time to time. We already have that..

Detroit's barren at DT, the idea of them selecting Derrick Brown and strengthening the trenches makes more sense at #3 to me than selecting a CB. Jalen Ramsey did go at #5 tho, and Denzel Ward was a #4 pick, so if Detroit believes that Okudah is the guy then I can see them making the pick a DB, but I do not think that any GM is endangering their job by taking the best DT in the draft. That's silly.

The QB scramble is likely to dictate the top ten picks. We could see as many as four QB's picked or as little as two.

I think that is the most difficult aspect to predict, which teams are going to go QB. If it is anything like the typical draft, once the second QB comes off the board, the run will be on.

You are right---the thing we know, with some degree of speculative certainty, is that Burrow, Tua, and Herbert or Love--possibly Herbert AND Love--are top 6 QBs in all likelihood.  Young and Okudah are the other 2 unlikely to reach us.  So if 5-6 players are gone by the time they reach us, that gives us some trade clout.

7. Panthers (Players that the Panthers would have to choose from: Simmons, Brown, Kinlaw, Wills, Wirfs...among others)

All of these teams need OTs

8. Arizona  (I hear the Cards like Wirfs and D. Brown with 2 weeks to go---I think they may take Brown)

9. Jacksonville (Interesting:  CAM NEWTON now being predicted to go to Jax--Jags like Wirfs, Brown, Becton, Kinlaw and CB Fulton and WR Jeudy.)  Hard to say with Jax, but keeping Cam healthy would be nice.  Wirfs is the pick.

10. Cleveland (Their GM recently said, "Don't assume we are taking a LT" then mentioned a few guys on the roster who had played LT before.  Bad poker face.  The Browns are taking Becton.)

11. NY Jets (a team positioned to offer a trade to the Panthers: There are basically 4 top OTs and OT is their biggest need to save Darnold's career.  I say the Jets make an offer to the Panthers--what would you do? For a second rounder (if we give them our first fifth) would you trade back?  If so, it is very possible that we would end up with one of the following players:

  • The Jets would take Wirfs at #7
  • The Cards would take D. Brown DT at #8
  • The Jags would then take Simmons, OLB at #9

The Panthers would have a choice:

Wills or Kinlaw (As much as I want Wills, and as much as I want them to add a second rounder, I do not know how you leave Simmons on the table and trade back. I stay at #7 and take Simmons.)

14. Tampa Bay  (There is no way they are NOT going to protect Brady--they need a T ready to start day 1.  They will be trading up, and I think they could call Carolina)

Anything can happen but I think there are eight players who have a decent chance to go in the top 6 picks.

Burrow

Tua

Young

Simmons

Okuda

Brown

OT1

QB3

Take Burrow and Young off the list.

Everyone else could realistically fall to us depending on what happens that night.

If Lions pass on Okuda he could easily fall to us.

If Redskins and Giants pass on Simmons he could fall to us.

Depending on medicals, Tua could fall.  I doubt it but it could happen.

Herbert could easily fall to us.

I think there is a very good chance Brown makes it to us.  Probably the most likely of those eight.

I just can't see the justification for trading down because we have so many great options that are likely to be available. The only way I would want to see it is if only Burrow goes before us and our top of the board really starts to thin out.

I just really am attached to being able to land a guy like Simmons, Brown or one of the top OT's and likely having our choice of multiple of those guys. I definitely understand the wisdom of adding picks in the 2nd or 3rd round but I question our ability to be able to take advantage of that.

What is with these Brown/Suh hyperboles that keep popping up?

I think Brown gets mentioned like that because he was a such a strong, physically dominant presence which makes people think of Suh.

I don't see it quite as much. Suh was a dark horse Heisman candidate and an absolute terror in college. I don't see Brown being that dominant.

I saw one draft profile that compared Brown to Kris Jenkins.

Gettleman tends to leak and show his cards when he really likes a player and that has been Wirfs through this whole process for those who've kept up with their draft follow-up.  He's smitten.

I've mentioned before but can also see Detroit coming out of nowhere to pick Simmons to lead that defense.

The kicker: SF trades up for Okudah per rumors.

Sooo..

1.CIN-Burrow

2. WAS-Young

3. DET-Simmons

4. LAC (from NYG)-Tua

5. MIA - Herbert

6. NYG (from LAC)-Wirfs

7. CAR: We land min. #13 and #31 or just take Okudah.

You have to take Okudah. You don't get a top 5 corner fall to you often.

It's close, because there's immense talent that could be had at 13 and 31 in this draft but I agree.  After Okudah, Henderson, Johnson, Gladney, & a few others are clearly on another level.  Plus we have almost nobody in our CB unit after Jackson and Luke.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
