The main takeaway for me is always be careful when an NFL team speaks, including (perhaps especially now) the Panthers. Be really careful to check out what they say...and what they don't.

And again, the transaction itself doesn't really bother me. It's a business decision. But they never should have allowed Newton to believe he was staying when he wasn't. I can't find a good business rationale to justify that. In my mind, it was totally unnecessary and ended up hurting a lot of feelings and causing bad blood that's probably gonna last a while.

Lie to us if you want to, but there was no reason not to be truthful to Newton.

A couple of related notes on Newton:

Jeremy Fowler (ESPN) said in an interview that Newton will likely have to wait until after The Draft (or longer) to determine whether he might have a new home. He also said Newton and his people are willing to be patient.

The Patriots are still speculated as a possible destination, but former Pats personnel guy Scott Pioli says he doesn't think that Newton and Belichick could "coexist".

There is a reason why the Carolina Panthers will always be bottom feeders and not one of the more storied Franchises in the NFL and a lot of it is just terrible, absolutely terrible decision making and team management

That last point could indicate that the Panthers will try Little, who played only left tackle through his entire collegiate career, only practiced (when he wasn’t hurt) at left tackle last season and is a long-legged, long-armed tackle prototype for whom Hurney traded up last spring while touting as a hopeful long-term solution for the Panthers at left tackle, at a different position. Like guard.

Newton has had multiple procedures on his throwing shoulder and is coming off surgery on his left foot. Add to that the magnitude of making him your starting quarterback, and there’d be enough to make Gill, a shoulder specialist himself, uneasy.

“There’s no way I could trust a shoulder exam [from someone else], based on strength, stability, motion, because of what might be important to me,” Gill said. “And I know just based on my track record, knowing how I evaluate people, what’s worked well versus someone else maybe saying that’s not as big a deal. … There’s no way I could sign off on a guy like that if I didn’t examine him personally.”’

Contracts are an amazing tool and one of the great things about being an American is everything is negotiable, even prison sentences.

If a team, any team, had real interest in Cam they wouldn't let the lack of a shoulder exam by their favorite Doc keep them from locking him down --- they would simply protect themselves with specific language in the contract. 

It's funny that Doctor Gill in the example provided above by @TheSpecialJuan Gill categorically says "there’s no way I could sign off on a guy like that if I didn’t examine him personally" as it goes to Cam yet with the Pedro Martinez and Red Sox, he did exactly that....even without examining Martinez he signed off on a 2-yr contract offer. 

Lack of interest in Cam isn't foot or shoulder related, there's something else.  Eventually we'll learn what it is...  (and I think Pioli provided a hint today)

More than one analyst has said that the unwritten rule when it comes to free agents is to not let them get to the final year of their contract. So if the Panthers do want top ensure that he never hits free agency, getting an early start on at least preliminary talks would make sense.

Will they actually be able to keep him? Jury's still out on that.

5th year option changes that for 1st rounders...I'm not a fan of starting extension talks now, especially if Marty is in charge of the structuring.

If we MUST pay him now, make it the most front loaded contract in the NFL.

#1 is Tepper.

#2 is Rhule.

#3 is Hurney.

At this point Hurney's role is to gather information for Rhule & Tepper.  Hurndog has no authority to do anything player related without involving Rhule all of the time, and Tepper almost all of the time.

Obviously Hurndog is also functioning as a liaison to outside media, etc as well.

I could somewhat stomach Hurney in a media liaison role with the team...so long as he has absolutely no contact in any way with the football operations.
