Left Guard

Hi boys and girls.  If you see one of my threads, it usually means the board is getting pretty stale.  So let's discuss a position everyone loves to talk about--LEFT GUARD.  I think we already have the left guard on the roster, I just do not know who yet.  And here we go...

Chris Reed:  We picked him up off waivers--remember?  Well (and I know that some of you are experts in all that is football, but until you get a website and a rating system for OL, we will have to go with second best), PFF rated him at 70.3 (in only 102 snaps in 2019) with 1 sack allowed.   He is 6-5, 310, and 27.  Depth for sure, but could he win the LG job?  For an OL he is entering his prime.  I like Reed to be the starter.  Here is why:

Dennis Daley:  Listed as a T, we played him at G last year until injuries set in.  He was not good at LT, but not many fifth-round rookies are.  Still, he played 686 snaps (58.3 PFF grade--at LT), and gave up 7 sacks.  However, move him inside, and you could have a different story.

Greg Little:  The Panthers mentioned that he would get a look at G with Okung taking over at LT for 2020.  He is a finesse player, and I am not sure if he can pull well.  His PFF score was 52.7--in only 224 plays--lower than Daley at LT.  He surrendered 3 sacks during the time he played.  To me, this is the third option at LG going into camp.  He needs to learn for a while like Moton did.

My choices are the 4 guys who can play Guard or center in the draft pretty effectively.. I think right now 3 would be 3rd rounders and 1 is a 4th or 5th rounder..

1. Tyler Biadiazz

2. Lloyd Cushenberry

3. Cesar Ruiz

4. Keith Ismael

Guys who can play guard for a year and move over to C if Pardis fails again..

I really, really really hope the panthers aren't short sighted enough to move Little to Guard. The guy looked NOT bad against one of the best pass rushers in the league in Chandler Jones. His season was derailed by injuries. Let him heal up, and learn under Okung this year and by his third year we may have a franchise left tackle.

We gave up a ton of draft capital to get Little, giving up on him as a LT is foolish at this point

I think there are other guys in the mix as well.   Kaskey was drafted in 2019 and obviously needed work but at 6'7" and 325 lbs, he has the size to play guard but does he have the ability to zone block and pull. I really don't know more than you can see in draft analysis but with a year of experience who knows.

Obviously Larsen can play center and guard .

And Miller could play right or left guard depending on team needs and coaching/player preferences.

I think we have enough vets to compete at both positions and expect more signings. I don't doubt that we will draft an O lineman in the draft. But little showed why you don't count on a rookie to start in this league.

If Willis was at 7 I would take him for one reason.  He can play either Tackle position and is rated higher than Little.  If Okung got hurt we could put him in or slide Morton to LT and put Willis at RT.  I don't trust Little at all.  Unless Rhule lights a fire under his Little's butt.

Little will never be nothing like I tried to tell everyone and that Verge dude that was so high on him. Another Hurney bust that will be out of the league in a couple years

Too early to tell---you have greater than a 50% chance of being right, considering where he was drafted.   Any knowledgeable football fan knows it takes longer than 102 snaps during your rookie season with little to no preseason to make a decision about long-term potential.  We all knew he was a project.

So by doing so....

If you watched the video, did you hear the announcer mention that Reed can play Center as well?  You have to wonder if this is not insurance.

And yes

I have seen your first 3 names in the second round a lot...but this thread was about Left Guard.  You are shopping for a C...And I am not sure that any rookie OL playing out of position for a season is healthy for the QB or team.  Some can play both, but that is not to suggest they can play G at the level they played C. Ryan K played G for while---not impressively.

I do not see the Panthers drafting an OL early.  I see QB or maybe WR (less confident about that after the flurry of signings) and I see defense---of course, we could move back and add a pick--that is how we got Ryan Kalil, if I am not mistaken.  (Either he or Jarrett in the second was the compensation for the trade down that gave the Jets Revis and we got Beason.)

I just don't understand where ppl get that Rookie LT dominant day 1 in the league.. It's one of the hardest position to transition from college to pros.. And it takes more then 2 season to fully develop at this position.. Daley and Little really didn't get 1 due to injuries..

I have looked for it and have not seen where Willis--the best OT prospect (in my opinion) since Thomas, could play LT.  If he can, sure---he is awesome in every phase of the game.

The transition of C / to Guard Especially left isn't a hard 1.. Kalil was smaller then all these guys and did it ..

Thank you. The amount of people calling him a bust after one year riddled with injuries are just wanting to be right so they can gloat about they were correct and Hurney was wrong. We already know Hurney sucks, let’s pull for this kid.

The concussions definitely are something to make you pause, but to label him a bust after one season is asinine.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
