Unemployment thread

Yeah, I think that's the big problem and I said it earlier in our college discussion. There needs to be a reevaluation of what positions actually need a college degree. Relative wages really haven't grown in decades. Yet, many more jobs now require a college degree to check a box for HR. People are making the same relative paychecks, but they're having to saddle themselves with more debt to qualify for those same checks.

This is the basic premise of how many of us were taught.  Unfortunately when we got out into the real world, we found out that that is not how a majority of careers and companies work.

This is sort of what I mean...we were told go get your degree, get your masters and come out the other side with a long career, and a host of companies trying to get you to sign up.

It's simply not the case.  That was a great plan in the 70's.  Today, maybe not, unless you are going into specific fields such as medicine, law, engineering, etc....

I do not know if this helps, but i know several who applied and are now receiving unemployment. One of them was explaining that it has to be approved by the employer, and they have to file paperwork.

Yeah - I know folks been drawing it for going on 3 weeks from work - that is what makes it so frustrating.  Some of them filed after I did. Employer has heard nothing from DES about my claim.   Something is screwed up in my application but I have no way of knowing what.  I I have no way to get it rectified.

Apparently not that many of you are unemployed due to this poo but some of us are and getting fed up with the state's response. Bills to pay and food to buy.  Beans and rice time here for weeks. I feel lucky to have beans and rice cause a lot of folks do not and are lining up at food banks if they are lucky enough to have a vehicle and gas to drive that vehicle to a place that is giving away free food.   Got an e mail from the DES tonite saying that I had to log in to see some new message from them - who knows what it might be.  And of course I got no relief with a $1200 check from the dump cause I don't have direct deposit and the dick face dump wants his name on every check like it is coming from him instead of the US Treasury and the taxpayers so that is holding that poo up most likely for wees more.  Tried to log in to NC DES and this is what I get now in response

Quote

In an ongoing effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, DES will be taking the system down from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each night for the foreseeable future in order to make system changes, upgrades and improvements. These improvements are being made to increase system stability and to make programming changes for the new federal programs. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience as we make necessary adjustments to the system during this unprecedented event.

So I called like 30 times today with no response but a phone hang up saying they could not help me due to too much demand,  and now their online system is shut down for 8 of every 24 hours for supposed upgrades.  And the phones are apparently only staffed 8 hours a day but who the fug knows if that is even the case?   WTF?   People are not going to take this poo show laying down much longer when they and their family members are starving.

More people filed initial unemployment claims in Colorado over the past four weeks than in any single calendar year between 2011 and 2018. Almost half of those claims came last week, so the rate of people losing their jobs is increasing rapidly.  The people losing their jobs this week were probably the same people posting bragging "essential worker" memes on Facebook last week.

I just got a company wide email from our head honcho basically saying, “We’ve lost millions, the gov programs aren’t enough, if social distancing protocols are still in place in August we are done.”

I suspect there are a LOT of businesses in this boat.

I support the effort to flatten the curve, but at some point you have to let people get to work or society will begin to crumble. At minimum, you have to start letting non-heavily impacted areas start opening up and maintaining social distancing standards while going about their life. Maybe that means restaurants open back up, but kitchen and servers are wearing masks, bar seating is closed, and tables counts are reduced and spread out.Maybe theaters open back up with most seats blocked off.

I don't know, but stay at home orders aren't feasible for months on end.

I know I'm late but to be fair this is a fairly recent development that has been slowly building since the 70's-80's.

I graduated from undergrad in 2001 & got a flood of interview offers in careers from teaching to lower management in various companies. Some of the teaching & sales positions were straight up job offers. I was going to grad school, so I turned them down.

My degree is in theatre btw. I managed to luck into a great career (albeit shakey at the moment) but whenever I teach I always tell my students on the first day "If I can make you question & quit this major I see it as a win."

Unless they come up with a cure or effective vacinne and are able to produce about a billion doses between now and August those protocols will be in place.  Whether or not everyone follows them is another story.  Some folks have a much greater risk of death from infection than others.  And you should be thinking about who you may be killing by not following the protocols.

There are no good options. You’re basically telling me I can choose between accidentally killing someone or taking my 5 year old and living in a box under an overpass. Perfect!

And some are pissed about having to work.  "OMG, I'd rather be on unemployment!"  That's the kind of stuff I've seen on my FB feed.

That's the choice they want to present you with.  Reality is a little less black and white.  Personally I'm not going to follow the moving goalposts.  We were supposed to stay at home until we flattened the curve, not until 18 months from now when there is a vaccine.
