Glad the NC department of employment security took the day off today and have their looong weekend.  Not taking any calls today.  Not like there are several tens of thousands of fellow Carolinians out of work wondering where their next meal is going to come  from.

It's those people's fault for not having months upon months of expenses in savings to tide them through a global pandemic that leads to economic shutdown.

Oh wait, big businesses need a bailout 17 minutes into social distancing protocols! Cut those checks!!!

I do not know if this helps, but i know several who applied and are now receiving unemployment. One of them was explaining that it has to be approved by the employer, and they have to file paperwork. I also do not agree with them making you go through the normal steps to get unemployment. Things like this can take time, it is parlous to approve everyone, without no checks. I heard many states are having similar issues, with being inundated with claims.

Over 444,000 claims to process due to corona virus and they get a holiday today and don't take calls on weekends.  Nice.

One of the very best parts of working a government job.  You get your pay, you get your weekends, and you get your pension.

I saw there was a college discussion earlier in the thread. I always push education, on my kids, other people kids, family, friends and other adults. Why, because education is needed. A HS diploma will not get you far these days, unless you luck out on certain jobs. I know where I work, you advancement is based on your education, Associates gives you a better chance for lower paying jobs, Bachelors gets you a little more, Masters and PhD's gets you the higher jobs, of course experience is thrown in there too.

Personally, if I was in the position to push someone one way or the other, I would be looking into the trades....not the colleges.

I think that we are going to see a big shift in the American workforce over the next 20 years, and I'm just not sure that having your Masters in English is really ever going to pay you back that time and money...especially if you took out school loans.

Yeah tell that to all those kids with useless degrees.

thefuzz is right.  Trades are the place to be.

Only college careers that pay good is Doctors and nurses.

It all depends on the degree you chose.  Degrees in history, English, Pol Ciirbce, philosophy, etc can be tough

Degrees in Accounting, Engineering, MIS, etc have very good job outlooks and very good pay.

but you are very right about the trades...overlooked by way too many and are a path to a very good life and career.

I agree in trades too. The cool thing is, most CC have a trade program, that can turn into an Associates. Which is a win win. I also agree, it depends on what your degree is in. Some jobs, really don't care what it is in, along as it is accredited. Technically, I can make more at my job, by advancing to a higher level. However, I am picky about which level I go to, and I just started Grad school, so I am content where I am at now.

This is the basic premise of how many of us were taught.  Unfortunately when we got out into the real world, we found out that that is not how a majority of careers and companies work.

I know mine does, they base your level of pay based on your educational level.
